Desktop App is being discontinued

While looking to download the Desktop App to a new laptop, found this:
https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/34904
“Remote access to your My Cloud Home device will soon change, as it will no longer be supported through the WD Discovery desktop app. Instead, you’ll need to use the web app to remotely access your content.”
I’m not sure what the impact of this will be, but it might affect some functionality.

So yes indeed… starting with firmware 8.12

See: How to Enable Local Network Access to Data on My Cloud Home Using the Dashboard with Cloud Services

STOP Critical:

* Firmware 8.12 and above is required on My Cloud Home and ibi device to access Dashboard

  • Firmware 8.12 will be released in the next few weeks

Local network access to data on a My Cloud Home or ibi device using the Samba (SMB) protocol can be accomplished using the local user Dashboard. The Dashboard is only available when the computer or mobile device is on the same local network as the My Cloud or ibi and after the device has been setup and configured.

I thought they were going to make it also available with the wd desktop, so you can have fast access at home (not 20mb/s) and then outside 20mb/s that is okey

But this is disgusting as syncronize was really useful

I think that the loss of remote access from Finder or Windows explorer will be the most disturbing.

Yes, i wanted to say that but it was confusing on the way i did

I thought we were going to have all available now options plus the new one of accessing without the app getting good speeds

Hello there … this is really nice … but, it would be nicer if the smb actually works … A couple of days ago I activated the smb (also created the smb user and password)… then, i mapped the drive using the windows explored mapping option … and yes, the drive/selected folder appears as a smb share but it is useless — im running a plex server in a wiindows tiny desktop and need to access the media stored in my wd home cloud, but plex cannot index the content due to a permission error … the user for the smb doesnt have the total control of the drive / not even a modify or write permission assigned … so, it is a glorified paperweight.

how can i fix this??? i need to set permissions to total control in order to access my media as it does when using the wd discovery app for windows …

A lot of user has the same problem in reddit and nobody knows how to fix this … when trying to change forlder permission it says that ia dont have permission to do this … i tried all the tweaks and perks to fix this, but right now im at WD hands … i think you need to fix this somehow…
