WD Discovery Desktop App End of Support

Hi all, first time posting on this forum, I am a long time My Cloud Home User (4GB Single Drive)
and over the years have been very happy using them, not overly complicated and reliable.

Was a little concerned with the sunsetting of the Sync function, I have now replaced this with FreeFileSync on my computer which works very well with Home Cloud and has more features.

The program is available from freefilesync.org and is free, if you find it useful bung a few quid to the developers, I am no way associated with them.

You will need to enable the new feature, Local network access on your My Cloud Home.

Hope some will find this useful

Regards
John

Hi @Sparky51

Hi Keeti_01,
Seems you did not read my post, if you did you would know I was just passing on Iformation to others and not asking for help.

Thank you very much, Spark51, for sharing. I have already enabled the local network access feature for my My Cloud Home. However, itā€™s not working. Then, I found out that I had to enable SMB1 for the access to work. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) I understand that enabling SMB1 can pose a serious security threat as the Windows operating system will be vulnerable to attacks. So, I decided not to do that. I felt itā€™s not worth it. Any thoughts?

I have been using FreeFileSyc to back up files with external drives. It is very useful indeed. I highly recommend it as well.

Freefilesync will not sync over the internet which is what WD Discovery provides. There are other posted partial solutions in the forum, most notably Tailscale which is a free mesh VPN that does not rely on WD relay servers.

As documented elsewhere, My Cloud Home no longer supports SMB1 no matter what, so that point is moot for old media players for example that required SMB1.

min protocol = SMB2_02

Hi MrEI,
I did not have to enable SMB1, mine just worked.
I have my network share mapped as :Z I donā€™t know if that makes a difference or not, I add Iā€™m running windows 11, Have you had a look at Freefilesync forum.

I will give it some thought and let you know if I think of anything that might cause that, Iā€™ll add to the thread.

Update:
My freefilesync is mapped as : C:\Users\johnm\Documents to Z:\Documents

Guest Access in SMB2 and SMB3 is disabled in some Windows installations - this could prevent not being able to access the My Cloud Home.

Thank you so much for your advice. Here is a funny story. I came across this information at some point in the past. I enabled the ā€œinsecure guest accessā€, but it didnā€™t work. So, I decided to disable it to where it was before and simply gave up.

Today, I saw your post and thought to myself, ā€œOK. Fine. Why not? Letā€™s do it again,ā€ and then it miraculously worked!

Here is my config (which might be useful for other people):

  1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) on your Windows device.
  2. In the console tree, select Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Lanman Workstation.
  3. For the setting, right-click Enable insecure guest logons and select Edit.
  4. Select Enabled > OK.

Hi NoPlex & MrEI,

I hope I am not teaching an old dog new tricks, But hope it will help others that might stumble upon this thread.

This is a note that I created for myself to get freefilesync to continuously sync as the help video was not to clear.

When setting up Realtimesync (One with Red Icon)
You import a batch file which fills out the fields, then you need to save this file from within the red app using save as (Your file name)
It is this file that must be added to the Shell:startup folder

To open the shell start up folder, open windows file explorer and in the top menu bar type Shell:Startup and drag or cut & past your newly created file into it.
