Discontinuation of support for WD Discovery

Is the said stopping of support for the above mean that only local access will be available after this?

I sincerely hope not. When they discontinued online support for my WD Cloud device, I was forced to spend a ridiculous amount of money on an 8TB My Cloud Home to reinstate internet access.

If local access is the only way, then now have two NAS devices that are effectively useless because I need the internet access and the WD discovery is the way to use this effectively. I know that web access would be possible but this is awful as I would have to deal with going to a website and downloading and uploading.

Once they sort this mess of a hack out, I hope they find an alternative solution to the WD discovery app.

Welcome, @bprecey:

I understand that they only discontinued WD Discovery, which is the application used by the OS to access MCH files through the file explorer, and that it is replaced by this local access.
Remote access apps, as well as web access, should not be affected, although it is difficult to know how the situation will be after the blackout, as they may have difficulties in reestablishing remote access without putting our data at risk.

Thank you. A handy app. Local access is great but not simple to do. I think there will be a lot of people struggling with this change.

After discontinued support for the WD Discovery app, remote access is a lot less simple. With the Discovery app you get all the configuration done for you, along with easy finder integration (access your files directly in a window on your desktop so you can drag and drop stuff). Basically the app does all that configuration work for you, and without it you’ll have to manually configure the remote access yourself. Tried it out and it cost me several hours to configure, so I decided to move away from WD and give Synology a try.

Is it worth keeping MyCloud if I absolutely need the files to show up in file explorer? I can’t even log in to get “Local Access”.

I’m on a MacBook and, before the outage, I would open WD Discovery and MyCloudHome would always be present in my Locations in Finder. I use (or used) MCH to store my Music files, so when I would add a new album it would be stored on MCH and the Music app would link to the media folder on MCH. Is there a way to do this with local access - have it always available in Finder and have the Music app link to it? Thanks.

With local access that’s no problem, even without the WD Discovery app. However remote access is another story.
