i have a 3tb seagate always connected to my media player- and i use a 64 gb verbatim usb to transfer files across- it started doing this and i have done it before with no issues- yesterday in the middle it said - write fail- check destination source- but it had copied some stuff across- any ideas on the cause of this>? i tried doing one at a time and got the same message. scanned usb for malware- nothing popped up. the usb drive is new like a week old- ejected from pc no issues. any help with be appreciated.
Hello,
I recommend you check the drive and the usb drive for errors using a Windows computer.
3Tb hasnt been on a PC in a while- only use through the media player- did an error check.
usb drive is literally brand new.,ā¦ will do an error check - might be manufacturer issue as i had the same one that failed on meā¦ thanks
Thanks for the reply- will update. am going to add files to a different usb and see if it copies from there- then i know it is the 64gb verbatim and will have to return itā¦ again!
I used another usb and it gave the same write fail message. But I have done copies last week and the 3tb hasnāt been on any pc. Is it possible that some file I copied across via the media player corrupted the drive? Will run error check on drive tonight. Media player also been having issues showing pink screen or playing with no sound . Been restarting. Is it possible the pLayer needs updating? Files copied from Windows 8. Comparability?
You can use the searchbox for āpink screenā and āno soundā - there have been a few posts on those subjects.
thanks- most say do a reset and restart- unplug replug in. been doing that and awaiting for it to sort itself out. i even changed the hdmi cable- is it possible that that cable needs to be swopped out after a few months?
also do you know how long you can leave the wd on for without causing damage? thanks
Firstly, you can change the HDMI cable anyway as you can get a perfectly good new one on Amazon for only a couple of quid. You can leave WDTV on all day if you want to, Iāve seen people on here say they never switch it off, but for me that doesnāt sound sensible and I assume they have some reason for doing it as it isnāt good. The only thing to consider about leaving it on for extended periods is whether the unit can ābreatheā or not, does it have air circulation all round it. (As silly as I know it does sound, I created a skeleton frame for mine from a fairly strong clear plastic food container/carton in only one minute, for it to rest upon and it works fine).
In a woolly sort of way, even as a fan of WDTV, I do think they can be temperamental. Both momentarily, and for longer, ultimately migrating to a stable, good state if you persist. Although I know thatās not technical advice, Iām just encouraging you to stick with yours if you can and do the things youāve already done, occasionally.
I sort of come out optimistic on it (pink screen, no sound and suchlike) and I would expect WDTV to come out the other side at some point, working correctly. I know thatās non-specific, hopefully others have specific advice, although I suspect itās resets/return to factory defaults/right up to - update/uninstall last update (which no oneās keen to do although there have been a couple of good guides on how to do that on here). In any event I agree with you, I doubt from what you say that itās the Seagate.
thanks for the feedback- i shall be patient and perhaps double check the air circulation on the player as i do find it gets a bit heated at timesā¦ will let you know once it is back to normal and if i can pinpoint what is was that made it better- besides time switched off!!
