Maybe I have missed the solution to this problem, but ever since the latest firmware update, connecting a USB drive to the NAS causes the front lights to flash and NAS to become unresponsive. Pulling the plug is the only way to reset it.
I have had this unit for over a year and I still can not get it to work.
I’ve tried everything with no luck. It appears that if I try to access the USB drive via Windows Explorer, that i when the NAS becomes unresponsive. I don’t need to access the USB drive on the network using Windows, but the backup capability via the dashboard does not work for me either. So I have not been able to find a way to successfully utilize the USB port on the NAS. Very frustrating in that I can only trasnfer files to a USB device connect to a computer via the network which is extremely slow and not practicable.
The backup utility has worked a few times for me in the past, but has been unreliable most of the time. With the latest firmware update, I can not select a USB source directory. I try to select it by checking the directory, but the path to the directory does not appear on the backup job screen.
If you searched the forum you would find a number of threads on this topic. It is most likely that you have not turned off “Media Serving” for the share created for the USB Drive. It is tured on by default. Therefore the USB Drive is being scanned for media, thumbnails are being created and consequently the EX4 is very busy. Turn off “Media Serving” for the drive and it should be back to normal.
