Changing Network Setup for WD My Cloud

Hello WD Community! This is my first post here.

Over the past 24 hours I have searched for articles, blog posts, anything related to WD My Cloud and my problem (mentioned below) and haven’t been able to find a solution. I am hoping the broad WD Community would be able to help me out on this one. Once I tackle this problem, I would love to start exploring other capabilities that my WD My Cloud has to offer.

Background:
I purchased a 2TB WD My Cloud last year to back up all my photos. What I did was connect the drive to a power outlet, connect the ethernet cable from the drive to a desktop switch, and my Windows Vista laptop to that switch. Note that I was using a hub/switch for my initial drive setup, which means there was no routing capabilities (no DHCP) and both my laptop and my drive was asigned the automatic IPv4 addresses. (I’m no expert, but usually home routers asign DHCP addresses in the 192.168.x.x range, but since this was only a switch, the IP addresses were something else). I did this because at that time, I had NO INTERNET connection.

I did the initial setup through mc_windows_setup.exe, had no trouble creating admin password and other user accounts, AND I was able to transfer files to my drive using the My Cloud Desktop software AS WELL AS through explorer by mapping the network drive \WDMyDrive\Username (and entering username and password), which lead me to normal copy and paste using explorer. I find using explorer easier though.

Note that I didn’t bother to take a look at NETWORKS on my explorer to see whether windows detected the drive or not.

Problem:
I have recently subscribed an internet plan at home, got myself a wireless modem/router all in one, and a new Windows 7 Basic laptop. I can browse the web using wired and wireless connection from my new laptop, with local IP address given out by DHCP from my router.

After browsing and internet seems fine, I connected my drive to the back of the router in one of the 4 ports, fired up the drive, and waited till the light turn solid blue. Then I ran mc_windows_setup.exe only to find that the setup software says that NO WD MY CLOUD FOUND, and a button to rescan the network. A rescan will have the same result. I have tried using wired and wireless connection, swapped the cables at the back of my router, no result.

Then, I tried connecting my drive and laptop to my old switch, isolated with out internet, and I am able to detect the drive. RESETTING with the tiny button on the back had no effect, both the 4 and 40 second solution. The only difference is that after I reset the drive and connecting it to my old switch, it asks me to create an admin password again, but not with my NEW ROUTER.

Question:
Can anyone help me point out any mistake I make in setting up my configuration? Is there a router setting that I need to look into?

UPNP in router is enabled (tried with it disabled too), I tried with Avast Free disabled and enabled, still the same.

I have disabled Internet Explorer and WIndows Media Player from the TURN OF WINDOWS FEATURES AND PROGRAM.

I only have WINDOWS FIREWALL, I don’t think that it will matter (tried it with firewall enabled and disabled).

NETWORK in explorer could not detect the drive, it only shows my laptop and my router.

WD Discovery software only detected my router.

I am lost.

Thank you for your time reading this. Sorry for the long post. Have a good day!

with the mycloud connected to the switch check the network settings and be sure it is set to DHCP, if not set it that way

shut down the mycloud

connect it to the router, turn is on

sign into your router and see what IP it assigned to the mycloud, use this IP in file explorer \IP or in a browser http://IP

the WD setup tools are not needed and not very good

once everthing is working I suggest setting a static IP address

Hi, larryg0. Thank you for your response. I have previously checked (while plugging my drive in my old switch) that my drive accepts DHCP, not static, but everytime I plug it in my new router, I have no means of accessing my drive at all. Web UI, through explorer, and installer software can’t detect the device.

I wonder, maybe its not getting an IP address. If so, what should I do? If not, any other suggestions?

Thanks.

What is the status of the LEDs on the MyCloud’s Ethernet connector? See p11 of the user manual.

Has you router found your MyCloud? You will need to access your router’s UI and look at its ‘devices’ or ‘local network’ page to see what it thinks is connected. It’s worth getting to know your way around your router…

Did you get your cloud to comply? I know it’s been over a year but I came across your post looking for something else.
