Cloud won't connect

I’m at a loss. When I first connected the drive, I could see it in the mycloud software, but it was getting the 169.x.x.x address. I tried a direct connection to my router, but that didn’t help. I reserved an IP in my router, no love. I tried to connect via the USB - Never gets recognized.
Any thoughts? Everything I have is windows 10, but, I don’t know what I can do if no device ever sees the drive.

First you cannot connect the My Cloud via USB to one’s computer.

Second there was a problem with the Windows 10 November update that caused the My Cloud not to be properly seen by Windows 10 File Explorer. That appears to have been fixed with the Windows 10 March update. So if you haven’t updated your Windows 10 PC, do so as soon as possible. More on the issue can be found in the following thread:

If you haven’t done so already, you may want to read the My Cloud User Manual ( as it explains how to setup the My Cloud. One typically connects the My Cloud to their router/gateway.

If you continue to have trouble setting up the My Cloud, you may want to do a 4 second reset and start the process of setup all over again. See the following WD Support document for more information on how to 4 reset or a 40 second system restore.

Yes, I have figured out that this won’t work via usb. Pretty disappointed I misread that.
My problem seems to be it will not pull DHCP across my wireless network. All my other NAS will. We will see. I’m setting it up directly connected to the router. Hopefully I can move it.

It is not really convoluted at all. Generally one just connects the My Cloud to their router/gateway via Ethernet, either uses the WD software to setup the My Cloud or opens a web browser window and goes to either http://wdmycloud or http://(IP address of My Cloud) to access the WD My Cloud Dashboard and configure the unit.

The My Cloud is not WiFi capable so the only way to connect it to either the local network or a single computer is via the Ethernet port on the device.

I’m not being clear, but it is my bad. I should have read that this would not work as a simple drive. I was price driven. I bought the wrong thing.
I will be moving the device shortly to see if I can pull an address across the network. I shouldn’t have to be directly connected to the router. If not, I’ll probably just sell this.

I’m not a fan of needing software to access a drive. I do not have to do this for my other NAS devices.

After I was able to access the drive directly connected to the router, I gave it a static IP. Now I have moved it back and it all works fine. Appears I won’t have to mess with the web interface ever again. yay

The My Cloud does not have to directly connect the My Cloud to a router, but it does have to be connected to the local network by Ethernet cable if you want all devices on the local network to have access to the My Cloud. As previously explained the My Cloud does not have WiFi networking capability, strictly Ethernet networking only.

It should be noted the only way to access any NAS, not just the My Cloud is to use “software” to access the drive. Software in the form of the OS or programs/applications/apps installed to that OS. One can access and setup the My Cloud with a web browser as previously mentioned, then only use Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder to daily access. One can go further to “map” the drive to their local computer for even easier access.

Unfortunately more than a few buy the My Cloud not realizing what it is, what it’s capabilities (and limitations) are, or how it connects to the local network. Some have unrealistic expectations for the device. The single bay My Cloud units are a low cost NAS with an embedded media server and basic remote access capability. Far too many people expect it to perform or have the capabilities of NAS devices that cost twice as much. Or expect it to be a USB type external hard drive.
