I have a PR2100 that i purchased to use just for Media storage and to use as a Plex server. Since the day i purchased it, and installed the Plex app from the dashboard, I am having an issue.
When I open the Plex app from the MyCloud Dashboard by hitting the (Configure) button, the PR2100 is found in Plex. I can also find it on other devices running Plex as well. (Home network, and Remotly).
AFTER 24 Hours, the Plex app on other devices can no longer find the PR2100 Media Server. I have to go back to the main computer, login to the MyCloud Dashboard, go to Apps, and open the Plex App by pressing the (Coonfigure) button again. This is a daily routine that is annoying!!!
I travel quite frequently for a week at a time, and if no one is home to do this process, my media is not accessible to me.
This seems to be a popular experience that I am finding all over the internet, but I am not finding any settings, configuration, or updates that have fixed this issue.
If anyone has a resolution, or a fix to this, please respond.
I have had many phone calls into WD, and they tell me that my PR2100 is configured properly. Sure, it works while I’m on the phone with them, but the next morning, back to where we started.
Maybe you need to spend some time at the Plex.tv site learning how this stuff works.
The configure button is merely the Plex app “dashboard” for managing changes to the setup. It does not need to run to use Plex unless you want to play from Plex on the computer.
Plex can be used at home using Amazon Fire TV, or Roku. These devices have their own Plex app for running Plex on them. If you want to use Plex on a smartphone or tablet, there are Plex mobile apps for them. *I have app on my iOS devices.
When away from home network and want to use Plex you use a browser, on say, a mobile device’s browser. Plex must have remote access on in Configure screen, and you can use it as you do from the apps as you have from home. In all cases, the Plex app must be running (“Run App”) on the NAS.
I have used Plex all these different ways, and they all work.
If you have Alexa devices, you can play from Plex using Alexa.voice commands.
I understand that completely. I have to go into the My Cloud Dashboard and hit the configure button to wake up the Plex app, otherwise the PR2100 server will not be found in PLEX. Within the network, or Remotly.
@Thurm that makes no sense… the configure button is just a static link to your PR2100 at port 32400.
The configure button doesn’t ‘wake up’ Plex…
The only way to stop/start plex server is by using disable / enable in the web GUI.
Did you reboot the NAS and upgrade plex already?
Note down the IP address (or press the LCD buttons of the display) and plex is always at http://<ipaddr>:32400/web/index.html … from within your LAN ofc.
Agree, it does not make sense.
To OP: when you go into the Plex settings of Dashboard do you click on Run App and keep it running? It should be accessible any time Run App shows ON.
BTW, have you used the My Cloud app to access the My Cloud NAS for your media files? You need Remote Access ON in dashboard. Maybe you need it on for using Plex remotely, too.
You certainly don’t need the My Cloud app, nor the Remote Access in the dashboard, for the Plex media server. It only causes unnecessary load on the box.
Yes, but I don’t always use Plex and I use my MPW remotely with the MC app, it is quick and easy. Plex can be a real drag sometimes. Also, I wanted to know if OP could get any action from the MC app since he is not getting any from Plex right now, and he also wants to use his NAS remotely, too.
If there is a “load” on the box, I don’t detect any.
Basically I mostly use Plex these days to ask Alexa to ask Plex to play music for total no-brainer automation to play music from my DL2100 NAS.
I apologize, I have to go into the dashboard to “wake up” the PR2100. Then it can be found on the network and I can open its server in Plex. I usually test it by hitting the configure button to open a window that has Plex in it. Lasts overnight, then I have to do the same thing the next day.
I have tried using the Dashboard App Remotly. It is working today, and it seems that all my media files are there. I will try it again over the weekend and make sure that everything is working.
On the Plex side of things, I will double check the settings for it to make sure the run app is on. At the current time (as of this morning) and doing my normal morning procedure to “wake it up”, Plex is working remotely as well… As I have mentioned before, its usually somewhere within a 24 hr. time frame that it gets lost.
I had some issues with remote connections when Plex was doing automatic portforwarding.
I’m now using a fixed port 32400 and forwarded this port in my router.
