It appears that you cannot attach a USB disk after this most recent firmware upgrade.
I initially upgraded the firmware while a USB disk (that I use for a Safepoint) was attached. After that upgrade, there were “network access problems” and I couldn’t get access to the My Cloud, even though the light was a solid blue.
So I disconnected the USB disk, downloaded the firmware and manually upgraded with the same firmware again.
After a complete reboot, I was able to access the My Cloud again, and even perform a Time Machine backup to it.
However, the moment I attach a USB disk to it, the My Cloud becomes inaccessible again.
My USB disk is formatted using Mac HFS+. It is a brand new WD Caviar Green drive in an USB 3.0 ICY Dock enclosure. It works just fine connected directly to the Mac. I did a Mac Disk Utility scan of the drive and it’s 100% okay.
So the problem is the inability of the My Cloud to access the USB drive after the firmware upgrade. Why? It was working fine on the previous frmware.
Here’s a picture of the typical error message after attaching the USB disk.
the USB disk seem to be a common issue especially with upgrades
I suggest unpluging the drive from the mycloud, doing a system only restore, then a reboot then try mounting the drive again.
I would give it a few hours before mounting the drive
I upgraded mine to 4.01.00-408 today and did a system only restore before the upgrade since I had a few issues. It is currently running better then it has since I got it, dot sure if it is more from the system only restore or the firmware
Hi larryg0, Tried your suggestion of System Restore. I can get the My Cloud back to a normal operating condition as long as there is no USB drive attached. But as soon as a USB drive is attached, it freezes within 60 seconds.
I’ve tried reinstalling the firmware.
I’ve rebooted many times.
I’ve done a System Restore.
I’ve done a Shutdown.
None of these solves the firmware bug that prevents my USB drive being attached. I’d like to make it clear, too, the USB drive worked fine under the previous firmware. So there’s nothing “funny” or peculiar about my USB drive. It worked like a charm before, acting as the Safepoint backup. It’s actually a brand new WD Caviar Green drive that works 100% when attached to my Mac directly. But as soon as it’s attached to the My Cloud, the My Cloud disconnects itself from the network, my shares disappear from the desktop, and there is no access to the My Cloud of any kind. Naturally, the light on the front is a nice solid blue. It’s just not working.
It’s clearly a bug in the firmware that either doesn’t like certain USB 3.0 drives, or something like that, which the programmers missed in their testing. No doubt, some USB drives do work with the new firmware, and some users will say “I don’t have the problem with my drive”. So the WD people will tend to think it’s a problem with my drive, even though it worked fine before the firmware upgrade.
As far as I can tell, the only thing to be done is wait until someone at WD decides this is a real problem, that it affects certain USB drive situations, and then get on and come up with a fix for it. In the meantime, I’ll have to make alternative backup arrangements…
I have the same issue… every time there is a new firmware there are new serious problems…
After previous update i was able to connect 2 disks with a usb hub. They updated - i was able to connect only one. They updated again now i can’t connect even 1. Next update will destroy tottaly the cloud…
Is there a way we can install 2-3 version firmware back???
edit: ok without the extra disk everything is ok. When i try to connect the disk i get 400255 error (WFT is this?). now i’ll transfer all stuff from external to my cloud through pc and format the disk to check again
I am wondering if there is an issue with existing safepoints on those drives and the new firmware not being able to deal with the existing safepoints. I think that if this is the issue, the Mycloud gets hung up trying to figure out where it is with the safepoints and becomes unresponsive. In my case, the MyCloud light was blue and the usb drive light was blinking on and off and on and off at about half second intervals.
