Battery Adaptor Capacity

I have a WD5000HI-00 external hard drive. I have a 12 VDC 750 milliamperes adapter. Will it be sufficient to run the drive? Can I get a manual for this drive somewhere?

Thanks.

No.

The minimum required amps for WD External Hard Drives is 1.5A (even for really old ones over 10 years old)

750mA is not enough.

Can’t find your hard drive model number on a google search … but it should be a 500GB external and would recommend a 1.5A / 12 Volts / 18 Watt Power supply.

If you can’t find a 1.5A PSU … then anything higher (2A, 3A) will be fine, just don’t go lower than 1.5A

If you still can’t find a PSU … then a 3rd Party USB Enclosure (which includes a Power Supply) is an option if you’re willing to remove the 500GB from it’s original enclosure.

Thanks Joey. I think I found the original 12 VDC 1.5 amp switching power supply.

Great ! … yes, that sounds like the correct one

Here’s a photo a took of my adaptor for a 10+ year old WD Elements 1TB

Make sure the “TIP” is + (Positive)

Newer WD power supplies will be branded KTEC (or K-TEC)
