Backups what to use - Smartware?

Hello,

I just moved to my new PC, finally, so going from Windows 7 to windows 10. I have an older My Clould, (bought back in 2016). I have been reading through the community and have found lots of great information. I was able to setup the My Cloud so that I can see it as a network drive (big help having that).

In the past I used Smartware to do backups. After reading through a number of posts I
was thinking of using Sync, even installed it, but decided I rather have backups. so uninstalled it.

I installed smartware from the WD site but it just seemed to hang when I went to start it. I did notice that the pgm has not had any updates since 2018 and then found some places on the web that stated it did not run with windows 10.

Here on the site I did find some posts about backups but they seem to be older. I was trying to do search again but getting message search is disabled because site under extreme load. Guess a lot of us being home we are all looking around.

So my question is what is the right pgm to use for auto backups with a My Cloud device these days? I did not understand some of the posts that talked about using other companies software so that you can swap devices later on. I don’t plan on swapping devices, just looking to make sure everything is backed up.

Since I have it connected as a network drive I can just drag and drop folders for now to back up the ones that will not be changing much, ie old photos and doc.

Thanks,

Jim

There are any number of third party backup programs, both free and paid, that will work for backing up a computer to the My Cloud (on the same local network). It is recommended to look for a backup program that allows one to create a rescue CD/flash drive otherwise one has to restore the operating system in order to access the My Cloud and restore the files using the backup program’s restore feature.

Here are a few such free backup programs:

EaseUS Todo Backup Free: http://www.easeus.com/
Macrium Reflect Free: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
Paragon Backup and Recovery Free: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/download.html
Free File Sync (in Mirroring mode): http://www.freefilesync.org/
CloneZilla: http://clonezilla.org/

Acronis is another popular backup program.

Or if using Windows 10 it is possible to use the embedded backup option to backup to an NAS drive like the My Cloud by mapping a My Cloud Share then use the File History option in Windows 10 to copy files to the NAS Share.

I have been and continue to use SmartWare to backup both of my WD MY CLOUDS, 1st and 2nd generation.

If you had SmartWare Pro and still have the Activation Code then you still have Pro, just enter the code.

It does work with Windows 10
