Check to see if the external drive is full or that it has enough space to hold the entire backup of the My Cloud unit (or what ever is being backed up). And as a troubleshooting step, use another external hard drive as a backup target. The following WD Knowledge Base Article may have some suggestions (if you haven’t seen it already):

I use the USB Backup feature to make offsite copies of my WDMyCloud, and I love it for that. But about half the time, the backup status shows as “Backup Failed. Please check your system settings”. Well, the thing is, the backup didn’t fail - I check the size and file count of the source folders and the destination USB drive, and they’re almost identical - if it’s failing, it’s only on one or two small files. My large System Backups are getting copied just fine. Is there any way to find out …
I am trying to use the Internal Backups app to sync data from one volume to another on my PR4100. There is ample disk space available but, the job keeps failing no matter how many times that I tried to use it. There is no log or any indication except for the job status “Backup Failed”. In job details the status is “Backup failed. Please check your system settings”.

I’m trying to backup my EX2 Ultra to an external hard drive via the USB Backup App.
I’m running on Mac OS Big Sur. The firmware on the EX2 Ultra is 5.17.107. The drive is a Seagate 5TB Backup Portable Plus. It’s formatted to exFAT as per the instructions . I want to copy a folder of about 2TB that has all my data but it runs for a few minutes and fails. It offers no explanation besides: “Backup failed. Please check your system settings”. I’ve tried resetting the device, trying different ports, t…
I have more than 10TB worth of files stored on an old My Cloud EX2 Ultra unit. It has two USB 3.0 ports at the back. Yet, I don’t see an option to copy anything from the WD NAS unit to the USB device. Please confirm the only option is to use the Ethernet connection.
The EX2 Ultra unit started to complain about “File System Check Failed” regularly. It wants me to “backup the data” and recreate the RAID setup.
To my understanding, USB 3.0 is at least 2 times faster than the 1Gbps ethernet connec…
