According to what I read, WD will shortly no longer support My Cloud EX2, connected to the Internet etc. And it will not allow upgrade to OS5 on that device. My question, can I remove my Two drives from my current WD My Cloud EX2 (total 6 TB Raid 1) and insert them to a new WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra OS5 NAS. Would the Drives be compatible? If so, is the process seamless, and easy to do? It would seem to be a much cheaper alternative than buying a new NAS 16 TB WD as they suggest even with the 20% discount. I don’t need much storage.
Theoretically, you should be able to migrate using “Raid Roaming”. (Look it up!)
I would still make a good backup before doing the deed.
Thanks, yes, I intend doing a back-up to a 4 TB external drive which should also be offsite as safe measure as well. I am not sure if I really need to upgrade to a $750 NAS for my needs. The diskless WD model costs about $180.00.
You don’t have to get a 16TB NAS from WD. . . .prepopulated units come in much smaller sizes.
I only mentioned the 16 TB model because WD will provide a 20 percent discount only if you purchase that device. I would have seriously considered the 8TB had a discount been allowed, but it does not.
Well. . .16TB is an awful lot of data to put behind WD software. . .
And $600 (after the 20% discount) is a lot to pay Western Digital a second time!
