Accesing External Hard Drive Through A Network

Background:

Just set up a WD TV Live HUB.   I connected it using an ethernet cable to my router (Linksys.)   I have an external Hard drive (WD) connected to the PC (USB.)   My PC is running Vista.

The WDTVL has access to the internet.  The automated set up worked correctly.  The Network Setup stated it worked fine.

Is it possible to get my WDTVL to play data off of my external hard drive through the ethernet cable/router?

How do I go about getting it set up to do so?

Any help is appreciated.

You seem to be talking about two different things.

I have an external Hard drive (WD) connected to the PC (USB.)

If the USB drive is connected to your PC, all you have to do is SHARE the folders on your network the same way you’d share the PC’s INTERNAL drive’s folders.

If the USB drive is connected to your ROUTER, that’s a whole different subject and depends on the router.

Thanks.  Once I share the folders, should the WDTVL just recognize them off the network or is there something I need to do?

If they are correctly shared, the WDTV will discover them automatically.

It appears that I am not correctly sharing them.  Can anyone supply some information on how to share the files on a network.

The link below will show you how to share your files over the network :

I followed the steps.  However, when I go to my WD TV Live and select Network Share as the content source, it states no content present.

See if this tutorial for troubleshooting helps:

Hmm, the videos in that link that show you how to properly share so that the WDTVL+ can see it are missing?
