1.03.49: Known Issues & How to Roll Back

While the 1.03.49 firmware does appear to have fixed the persistent HDMI bugs (and several other major issues, compared to the BETA chains), it appears to have introduced new substantial issues.  These issues only appear to affect specific people;  many other people have reported that they are running with no issues at all.

PLEASE.  Do NOT add to this thread unless you can CONFIRM (via ROLLBACK) that the problem you’re about to report is NEW.

Below is a list of the repeated issues I’ve noticed from the multiple threads.

This is NOT intended to be a COMPLETE BUG LIST; just a list of the MAJOR issues that have appeared between 1.02.21 and 1.03.49.   Also, I’ve only included items where users have said they “Rolled Back,” and the problem went away, confirming that it’s a NEW issue.

Note, for quite a few users, the problems disappear by doing the following steps:

  1. Pull the power plug for a few minutes.
  2. With the power ON, hit the RESET button quickly to do a restore to factory.(requires re-configuring after restart)
  3. MANUALLY do a “Restore to Factory Defaults” in the menu (requires re-configuring after restart)
  • Change in audio bitstreaming affecting some users with some AVRs / TVs:  “Noise”, no DTS, or no audio at all.
  • Miscellaneous hangs, freezes, and Slowdowns (particularly if unit is left on for a long time) requiring a pull of the main plug.
  • Inability to discover or connect to some SAMBA devices (MANY people report that CLEARING the password info from the WDTV corrects this, others no.)  May be a mismatch in authentication types.  See THIS POST.
  • Loss of functionality with some WLAN adapters that previously worked (ex. WN111)
  • Requirement to attempt login TWICE before it will work (Network Share Cannot be Accessed error)
  • The audio setting “Digital” versus “Digital without HDMI” (new to this version) doesn’t work as expected.
  • Still some lingering HDMI issues (but they appear to be VERY few compared to the long Beta history)
  • CANCEL and RETRY on some menus perform the opposite function of what is selected.
  • Various limitations related specifically to DVD navigation

To ROLLBACK to the previous production release, follow these instructions:

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5800

Sorry didn’t read the message above about not adding to this chain.

Out of interest if you have a WDTV Live PLUS and want to rollback to the 1.03.29 firmware follow the instructions on the page below. The rollback link is halfway down the page.

http://wdc.com/wdtvliveplus_limitedpublicbetarelease/

if you know what you are doing, the direct link is here:

http://download.wdc.com/wdtv/wdtvliveplus_rollback_1.03.29_B(1.03.43_B).zip

(ignore the 1.03.43_b at the end, this rollback was designed for the beta firmware but it will still work with the recent release)

One should always reset the player before updating. That way it is in a defined state. For good measure I also always reset right after an update, YMMV.

i tried the rollback and im still having the same problem. i verified the version rollback to 1.02.21, wdtv can see my network devices, but when i try to log in to my linux laptop, i get the error “there is no media in the current folder”.  all was working fine yesterday until the it updated. any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks,

mike

I did the updated I encounter issue with the network share (ie. can not connect). After reading OP instruction, I was able to gain access network share on the windows server 2008. regarding “there is no media in the current folder”, i encounter this problem before on windows server 2003 and linux os samba when using the network share. most people pointed out due to lack of support. Only work for me windows server 2008. The alternative is to use dlna but it does not support subtitle. i guess due to the limitation of dlna

news flash,

i went in to the shared folder on my linux laptop, and re-shared it. it seems to be back to normal at his point. i tried doing the rollback for a 3rd time, reset to factory settings and reflashed to the new firmware. still had no luck, so i went back to my laptop and re-shared the folder, the folder contents came right up and the movies are visable. im not a linux guru and im at a loss to explain why that fixed it.

many thanks for the helpful comments
