Will extra RAM help efficiency of my PR4100

Should adding RAM improve performance or have I wasted my money?
What should I gain from adding RAM?

That depends. I added the extra RAM and performance when it’s very busy with several users accessing it performance is better. If it’s just a single user I doubt it’ll help you much.

One other thing, unless you want tied to WD’s cloud authentication system DO NOT install OS5. Stay away from it like the plague. It’s a TOTAL disaster and with the TOTAL lack of comments from WD staff here it shows they’re clearly out of their league with dealing with the problems.

Adding RAM helped a lot . Noteably cutting indexing, or copying files TIME, subsequently.
I do regular PR4100 backup, to ANOTHER PR4100, times are cut substantially.
Even building RAID time is cut by half.
tested several times

After OS 5 upgrade, I upgraded the RAM on my PR4100 from the factory 4 GB to 8 GB. I did not see much of an improvement. I use the NAS mainly as a mediaserver (with Plex) and for document backup.

Hi,
thanks for other comments.
Observations: Wednesday.
What yesterday after fitting the 16GB of RAM sat at around 25% (what would have been 99/100% with the 4GB). Played around doing various tasks, moving data around to the also new for me iSCSI drive. Not once did it appear to go over the 25% mark.
However today it’s sitting on 41%, No indexing going on that it’s telling me about anyway. CPU is sitting idling at around 2%, but I’ve seen it dodge up to 87%.
So to me all in the world is ‘currently’ looking rosey.
Long may it persist.
Ah forgot my laptop not talking to anything but itself… I’ll raise a new task for that one.
Regards to all that have contributed to this discussion, I think it will be going on a bit longer.
It is nice to hear a single user is not alone and the group seems to help a lot.
Power to the elbows.
Thanks again

Hi
Can anyone at WD give us a bit of an insight as to how and when the extra RAM is used please.
Is it a waste of money if you are a home or small business user, or is 16GB really aimed at the heavy user for small business to medium?
So far I’ve only seen it raise to 41%
