Where to begin using the WD - My Passport

I think I am finally in the right area!!
I have loaded the WD files on to my laptop and now need to know how I begin copying my data onto the external hard drive to then save them onto the new laptop!

Is anyone able to help me with getting started with my WD - My Passport? I need to get everything off of my old laptop so that I can get my new laptop set up!

if you are looking to clone your old laptop onto your new laptop, the process is different than if you are looking to simply copy files from one PC to another.

One of the easiest way to “clone” your old hard drive is by using a program like Macrium Reflect, creating an “image” of the old hard drive, and then load that image onto a partition on your new hard drive. >>If you go this route, MAKE SURE that you load the image onto an EMPTY partition, because I believe loading an image erases/overwrites existing data on said partition (i may remember it wrong). <<

The other way, just copying files also has several ways of going about it. The easiest way is to go to My Documents (or My Pictures or whatever the folder is that you want to copy), copy your docs (or whatever), go to My Computer, open up the My Passport, create a folder named something that you’ll remember, and paste into it. When you are done copying files off the old PC, make sure you use “Safely Remove Hardware” (in the notification area, usually on the bottom right near the clock). Then, on your new PC, transfer the files the same way (copy, navigate, paste to the desired location). Windows even has a program to help you transfer files from another computer; this may or may not be of help.

WD’s software may have a program to help you transfer files, but I dont know. I’ve always gone the old copy/paste method for all files that I care about.

I hope this helps give you some starting points.

edited for grammar

Thank you so much for your help. This is making more sense to me now. I will definitely give it a try!

I edited my earlier response to fix some grammar errors, and make it easier to read (I hope).
