hi guys , have some questions regarding the 3tb My Book Essential …

kindly bear with me on these :slight_smile: if you don’t mind kindly answer each after every question for easier cross referencing

  1. my laptop runs Windows 7 Basic 64 bit … do i need to run any kind of formatting first of the 3tb prior to usage to avoid problems arising later on while connecting the 3tb to my laptop … format using the WD software , i think it is called the WD QuickFormat program … or any other formatting software perhaps ? what are your thoughts ?

1.a. will my laptop automatically recognize the 3tb upon connecting it , without doing anything preparatory first

  1. btw , i have read that there is an issue when it comes to the usb part of the my book essential usb 3.0 … am i correct that the problem pertains to this : the usb 3.0 part of the enclosure would fall off … as in literally fall off from the enclosure ? so it’s like pulling out the usb part of the enclosure… is that it ? … or the problem is simply the usb part of the enclosure is wiggly at times ?

  2. does the problem have a correlation to the size of the drive … so a 2tb or a 4tb would be better instead of a 3tb … ?

3.a. does the My Passport have the usb issue also ?

  1. what remedy can you possibly think of to avoid the problem ?

4.a. does keeping the usb 3.0 cable always connected to the enclosure ( meaning the usb cable wouldn’t be unplugged anymore ) really avoid the problem altogether ?

  1. does the power connector of the enclosure have issues as well … the power connector falling off perhaps ?.. so it is better to keep the power adaptor always connected to the enclosure ?..

1/1.a: Nope, it should recognize it right away.

2: I understand that the USB port might get inside the my book, but I don’t see that a lot. 

3/3.a: Nope

4/4.a: Take care of your hard drive. The less you connect/disconnect the USB cable the better. But is not like if you do it 50 times it will brake. Use your my book as you need to use it.

thanks for the reply … just have soem follow up questions if you may :

  1. between a 2tb and a 3tb My Book Essential usb 3.0 … are there more problems / longevity issues with the 3tb … meaning there are more complaints from people for the 3tb My Book Essential … like their 3tb not working properly already after just a couple of months … stuff like that …

  2. have you had experiences wherein you are in the middle of transferring a file to your My Book Essential or just about anything that makes the computer read data on your My Book Essential … thereby the little white led light continuously flickers meaning data in it is being accessed / read  … and suddenly it lost its connection to your computer …

  1. Not that I know of, you can do quick search on the community and nothing will come up that shows that one is more reliable than the other. 

  2. Nope.

I think the biggest problem is bugs and conflicts with USB 3.0 itself especially with addon cards.
