I just purchased a Live Plus last night. Everything was very easy to set up. I had one issue with it detecting my Server 2008 machine but after some research I found I needed to enable netbios. Everything worked GREAT after that.
However,
This morning I turn on my WDTV and it isn’t detecting ANY network shares. I thought I will do the normal thing I tell all the people I do tech support for and restart everything. I restart my cable modem, linksys router, Server 2008 machine, and my WDTV. I checked the network settings and everything is good there. I can even watch youtube videos from it fine. However it still doesn’t detect my server 2008 or even my Windows 7 Pro computers on the network. Does anyone have any advice for me to do? It IS running the newest firmware 1.03.29 B.
If someone could help me that would be great. Like I said no problems until today and I have been reading trying to figure it out but no luck. I’m not a person that just goes to people asking for the answer without giving it a go myself.
I will be checking this post every 10 minutes or so.
I assume you’ve done all this but it never hurts to touch base:
Assign WORKGROUP to all your computers workgroup.
On your Win 7 machine make sure you take off passwords on your shares and add EVERYONE to the share
Make sure you haven’t got Windows ID Live Assistant installed anywhere in your system.
After you do all the above, reset the Live (use the paperclip or more preferably reset via the settings menu) and then login again using anonymous with no password.
I checked through these again just as you requested. I will admit the Live assistant WAS installed. However uninstalling it did not fix it. Maybe a little more information would help.
Last night I was able to go to "File Management and see both of my computers on the Live. This morning I can’t even do that. So it isn’t a password/log in problem. When I click on File Management it says “Select Source” “No storage present”. I obviously don’t have a USB drive plugged in. It does detect those when I plug them in. I simply can’t see that there are open shares on the network. So nothing should have changed from last night that I can see. I have also tried just having 1 computer on the network to check and see if multiple computers was the issue. It was not.
When I click on Videos then Network Shares nothing happens. It just seems as if I haven’t hit “Enter” on my remote.
I read the post below me as well and you mentioned about updates. My windows 7 did update last night. However it just updated windows defender. I disabled defender attempting to get Live to see my 7 machine and it did not. I have 2 updates available to run on my Server 2008 machine that I have not downloaded yet.
I know you said you did it all, but after you uninstalled Live assistant did you reset the WD Live itself? It definitely needs resetting after all this.
And at one point do things not work? Do you see the shares but can’t login, or do you get to a login screen but can’t get further? Walk me through your process.
I click on Video—>Try to click on Network Shares but literally NOTHING happens. It seems as if I didn’t even press enter.
If I try to view the computers on the network through the file management…
I click–>Settings–>File Management
At this point it says “Select Source”. Last night it showed both of my computers in this spot. Now it simply says “No Storage Present”.
I don’t really have much to go off of here. When this happened I figured it was a networking issue so I got on my laptop(Win 7 machine) and I can access the shares on my server 2008 machine fine. So I thought well maybe the network isn’t working on the Live box. I pull up network properties and test connection it is fine. I can also browse Youtube and even stream from Pandora. It just isn’t liking the local network shares.
You said you enabled netbios on your Win 2008 server, so I may be out of ideas. I know there was *something* folks needed to do with a 2008/2003 server machine, but that’s probably what it was (you might try a forum search just to make sure it’s nothing else, though).
Trust me I have performed many forum searches on multiple forums. It did take me a while last night to figure out the netbios setting but it wasn’t too bad. I just don’t understand what happened over night that caused it to just stop seeing both machines all together. When Netbios wasn’t enabled I was still able to see the Windows 7 machine. Now I can’t even see that. I think I will try resetting my router and see if that might have any affect on it.
So I got to thinking…WHAT WAS DIFFERENT LAST NIGHT!!!
The only difference between last night and today was the fact that I had my laptop unplugged physically from the network. I said screw it I would try to plug it in. I plugged my laptop in to the router and BAM BOTH computers appeared on the Live after a restart. I then said to myself there is no way that would stop BOTH computers from being visible. I turned the Live off and unplugged my Laptop. Booted the live back up and NOTHING. Why this happens like this I have NO clue. I am going to continue to investigate this matter more. Will post more when I have more info.
I have tried multiple scenarios now and I wanted to post my findings because it might help others in the future.
When it is just my 2008 server machine on the network with literally nothing even connected to the wireless LivePlus doesn’t even detect I have shares on my network. When I have my Windows 7 machine plugged in via NETWORK CABLE it not only detects my windows 7 machine but it THEN detects my server 2008 machine after a LivePlus restart. As soon as I unplug the cable and restart my LivePlus, both computers then are not viewable in file management. I don’t really know why this is. Both my wireless and LAN connections on my laptop are configured the same way. And even if they wasn’t it should still detect my server 2008 machine when nothing else is on the network except it and LivePlus. Port positions on the router wasn’t an issue either tried multiple ports.
If anyone has experienced this bug or may have a reasoning as to why this might be occurring please let me know. I would love to just figure it out. More knowledge is always good in my eyes.
Since you’re running SERVER, have you tried the server policy that FORCES itself to be the WORKGROUP Master Browser? (That’s one of the benefits of running the server build.)
Since I don’t run WIn 200x Server, I can’t tell you HOW to do that, but I’ll bet a well-worded Google will pop it up…
That was the problem. Apparently my laptop had the service “Computer Browser” running. My server had it disabled so it was counting my laptop as the Browser Master. As soon as I started the service up it was able to populate File Management on LivePlus with JUST my server. Thank you everyone for your help and hopefully me responding back with details on how to fix the problem with assist others in determining what their problems are and how to fix them.
I think this forum has gained a regular. :) I am very pleased with the WDTV Live Plus.
OH MY GOD THANK YOU. I have been trying for WEEKS to solve this issue. It was the Live-ID assistant all alone! I have to wonder exactly what that thing is doing.
I think I’m in the same boat. This is summary of what I’m getting:
If my desktop (through wifi adaptor) is the only thing on the network, I cannot access network shares. If I start my laptop first, Live sees it through network shares. It then sometimes suddenly picks up the desktop or sometimes the desktop won’t show.
Sometimes it’ll see my desktop - for no apparent reason. I haven’t done anything different. I’ll be there 15min watching something, check again and network shares will show. And I haven’t been at the desktop at all.
Last point is that I’m on Live, not Live Plus but I think the problems are identical. I DID NOT have this problem at all until the latest official firmware (the problem exists on the current beta also). I’m certain something has happened in the firmware upgrade that’s caused the problem for me.
I’ve tried to pin down the cause but it seems completely random to me even though I know it’s not. If anyone out there has a solution, please post. The Media Server option always works for me so the problem isn’t major but I’d really like it fixed - especially when it was working fine.
I was wondering if anyone knew how to or if network shares will work with a Mac using airport extreme and express ??
I’ve set everything up(a few times/based on prompts from airport and wd live plus) It shows my Macintosh and I entered group name and IP but I has library, then found that the “wd discovery download” on this site and it’s only for windows…
Does anyone know if there will be a Mac release or did I do something wrong??
Bought this for my bedroom TV (which isn’t hdmi)- really like It … It would just be cool to not have to transfer files from hard drive to hard drive.

I’m having similar isues with a new WD HD TV Live medi player. Although I know enough to navigate directories to different folders. I am new to Windows 7 and “network shares”. I there an FAQ or web page somewhere that describes step by step how to check/set network shares?
We have two computers both Win 7, a wired connection and WDTV/Live sees both one it can access and the other gets “This network share can not be accessed”. I tried WD support and was told the message meant a firewall setting was the problem and I checked and the computer getting access had no firewall up so I turned off the firewall for the second computer but it made no difference I did turn off the WD before testing the connection. Now I’m browsing similar threads but I find that I don’t know how to do things like “take off passwods on your shaes and add EVERYONE to the share”.
Thanks for any references you might have to share,
Judy
Desperate to get this running before my return policy runs out.
