Hi,
I read that the WDTV Live can open a my book elite locked drive so I was hoping it would also work with my 2 WDTV HD but it does not seem to be the case. Is it something I do wrong or it really is not supported?
Thanks!

Where did you read that? The media players are unable to see locked Smartware drives, otherwise it would be very easy to trick the security IMO.
My friend, you may have to disable the security (Kill the password under drive settings), as the media players don’t ask for passwords, even the new units.
I know it does not help a lot, sorry >_<

The Gen2 User Manual says that the WDTV HD will work with WD password-protected drives.
But then it was also built when the only Password-protected drives were the Essentials and the Passports – I don’t know if it’s been tested with the new Elites.
WD lists the Passport Elite as being tested compatible, so I’d assume that includes password unlocking, but it doesn’t list the MyBook Elite as being compatible.

They are compatible, correct, but they still have to be unlocked (At least on my media player my drives are not seen if I have a password). Sorry if I was not clear enough >_<

Like this:
- *> Unlocking a Password Protected WD Drive > If you have connected a password-protected WD drive to the media player, you must
enter the password to access its contents.> To unlock a password-protected WD drive:> 1. Prior to the appearance of the media player menu, the following screen displays.

Press / to select OK, press ENTER, then type in the correct password.> If you enter the wrong password five consecutive times, the USB drive is placed in

cycle and reconnect the USB drive and type in the correct access password.
Huh? o.o
My player (WDBABG0000NBK) does not do that, it just ignores my drives if I have a password. I decided to try several factory resets (5) and then to update the firmware after I saw your post… It still does not do it.
Just when the unit is out of warranty I discover that I have a missing feature that I never missed, I can’t complain.
Kudos for the post, RoofingGuy!Â
For both of these issues, the only two things I can think of are:
So, if it’s a supported drive, in the correct format, and the drive is properly closed, it should be showing up and giving the password prompt on a Gen2.
If the MyBook Elite from the OP was properly closed and can’t be re-formatted to show up, I’m not sure what else to suggest – it would appear to just be incompatible.
If Pizza’s drives don’t have either of the 2 issues, I’m not sure why they’ve never shown up either.
I only have a Gen1 and I’ve never even tried protecting a drive because I didn’t see the point. The Gen1 manual doesn’t have the same password-unlocking instructions as the Gen2, so I have a feeling that if I protected one of my MyBook Essentials, it’s not going to work.
Well, my Gen2 is a pre-release leaked a month and a half before the actual release by BestBuy… So it may simply not have the feature?
Anyways, I see no harm.
