WD101EFAX-68LDBN0 - Runs very hot

I just wanted to check and see if there are anyone else who has experience with this or a similar model. The disks runs very hot, very fast, they show as HEALTHY but the temperature is 44-45 digres Celsius. Is this normal?

They are mounted in a Synology DS1511+ (5BAY), and I have changed all the fans due to the high tempereture.

I used to have a pair of Microscience 300MB SCSI hard drives that were always too hot to touch, no, I mean pick them up once, don’t do it again, that hot. I was told that was not too hot, it was normal for these drives. They ran fine for years.

That said, your WD drive temps are all over the place while the Seagate are fairly close.

In a RAID 5 or RAID 6 array, it is common for the temperatures of the hard drives to vary slightly, but they are generally in a similar range. Factors such as the physical position of each drive in the enclosure, airflow, workload distribution, and individual drive characteristics can cause small differences in temperature. Drives located closer to cooling fans or vents may be cooler, while drives in less ventilated positions could run warmer. However, significant temperature differences could indicate airflow issues or a drive that is potentially experiencing higher strain.

You may want to see if there are any cables inside the enclousre that are hindering airflow and look at other SMART statistics and see if anything is exceptionally high that may indicate potential problems. Other than that, perhaps WD drives normally run hot? I can’t really speak to that as I no longer deal with lots of computers or drives.

Regards.

The WD HDDs are air drives whereas the Seagates are helium models. Air drives run hotter than the equivalent He drives.

I would only start to be concerned if the temps exceeded 50C. I think the spec may be as high as 55C.

Well, disk 2 blew up and after that the rest stabilized at around 40 degrees. Will consider changing them all with Seagates, which seems to run at lower temps. Thanks for your replies.

WD also has helium disks as they sell to the server market too

I found USB boxes keep disks running cool for backups and general use. USB hubs allow multiple disks connected to ease moving files around.
