WD TV - Some MKV videos not working on 2.02.32

I’ve just noticed that I am now unable to play MKV files on my WD TV, it has worked in the past but now doesn’t seem to work.

I’ve tried playing MKV files directly from a USB hard drive plugged into the box and this says its not a compatible file format and that I should check the user guide.

I’ve tried to play the file via local storage, media server and over an NFS share, and all have the same problem of not being able to play the file.

Other MKV’s play fine but this one doesn’t I am unsure why.

Here is the MediaInfo for an MKV file that I cant get to play.

Your unplayable file is H.265 which is not supported.

(and won’t be on any current WDTV … 1080p H.265 requires at least a Quad Core CPU/GPU to decode"play" the file)

ID : 1
Format : HEVC
Format/Info : High Efficiency Video Coding

You will need to re-encode (handbrake) your file to H.264

ok so what youre saying is wdc has no plans to incorporate this recent container format even though alot of encodes are now in this container format is there a hint a 4th gen device is in the works its been almost 5 years now since smp came out

h.265 / x.265 “HEVC”  is a “Codec”    MKV is a “Containter”  ie. a MKV can contain h.264 / h.265 + plus many others

WDTV use “Hardware” Decoding …  so if h.265/x.265 decoding is not built into the decoding chip (Sigma Designs) then it’s not possible.

As for a 4th Gen … are there any plans ?    no idea

Really? AFAIK the scene does not use it but only newbies who don’t realize that the codec is far from optimzied and currently yields no real benefit over h.264.
