WD Red very noise when seeking, noise every 10 seconds

I bought first 4 TB Red, and it made loud noise when seeking and also it made noise (like heads movements) every 10 seconds. I thought that is because of 4 platters, so I returned it and bought 3 TB model WD30EFRX-68EUZN0, but it do the same. Please note this is not because of idle3 timer, load/unlock cycles counter is not increasing, still it make noise every 10 seconds.

I have older 3 TB Red WD30EFRX-68AX9N0, and this hdd make no noise at all, seeking is barely noticeable. This hdd also make noise every 10 seconds, but it is very quiet, I must put ear on hdd to hear that.

My question, why there is so difference between these HDDs? Will the noise go away after few days/weeks of use? Because if not I need to return also the 3TB model and go to seagate.

I have NAS in living room and this noise is disturbing in night.

thanks

Nice, I found old datasheet from 2013, there was

Idle/Seek (dBA)
2013
2014

WD30EFRX
23/24
23/27

WD20EFRX
23/24
23/27

WD10EFRX
21/22
21/24

thanks WD, thanks…

This looks like turned off Automatic Acoustic Management, does anybody have software to turn it on? HD Tune detect that there is no AAM, but there is some AAM as the louder one has better access time (16 vs 21 ms).

I suspect that the drive may be performing a Background Media Scan. If so, then you will find that Seagate’s drives do it, too.
