WD Red WD3001FFSX - 5 second click/tick when idle

Hi all,

I’m really hoping somebody can help me out here. A friend has passed on his two year old Lenovo NAS it’s a PX4-400D. I have bought two WD Red WD3001FFSX 68JNUN0 3TB and installed these into the unit, factory reset and RAID mode 1.

But, when the room is quiet and the unit is completely idle, I can hear a constant sound tick/click every 5 seconds. Both cages would light white every 5 seconds and the unit would light blue every 5 seconds.

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

I’ve never had to do it before but maybe there are firmware upgrades for WD Red SATA drives that can help? Or a change I could make somehow with the drive?

Hi Damon1 ,

Which enclosure are you using ? Is it WD or any third party ?

It’s a Lenovo PX4-400D NAS with the specified WD Red’s.

Hi Damon1 ,

Have you tested the drives with WinDLG software for its funcationality ?

I’ll do this when I get home tonight. Yesterday, I did a support files full dump and that seems to have some smart data at the end.

According to WD, this irritating noise is a ‘feature’ of their newer drives; there are quite a few threads on this kind of thing all over the place: e.g. Periodic Noise from Head Movement WD Black 4TB - #29 by MikeVeltri

Make sure to create a support ticket or return your drive so that WD know that it’s just plain stupid for an idle drive to be making this kind of noise so regularly.
