I recently bought a MPWS and expected to be formatted in exFAT. I wanted the most robust file system since I use it only for backup of sd cards, so I started to search this community for info on how to format this drive. Equipped with all the info I need I connected the drive to windows to put the disk in NTFS. I got a big surprice when I looked at the disk :

So no more exFAT ?

Mine is also NTFS. So what; it works fine. exFAT has its issues, so looks like WD went back to NTFS. Just be sure to copy and save all original files if you decide to format exFAT so you can reinstall them. I am staying with NTFS because it is what WD formatted it.
