WD My Passport 0820 not being found in my computer

Hey guys,

I got an external drive from my friend to load some photos and videos from it. When I plug the drive into my computer (Windows 10), it installs the drivers and then it doesn’t show up in my computer. It does however show up in my task manager and in my disk management. I am pretty sure that this is not a Windows 10 issue, so I have tried it on a laptop running Windows XP Home and the issue still remains… I have around 6 PCs in my house and the same thing happens on every one, even on USB 3.0…

The funny thing is, is the fact that when I am in the disk management segment, most of the options are highlighted grey when I right click (see image). This happens on all my computers. The only thing highlighted is “delete volume” and I don’t want to do that as there is data I want.

I have tried another cable from another WD My Book drive and that still does not solve the issue.

The disk powers up and it spins.

Is there a way to get the computer to recognize the drive?

Thanks for your help.

The symptoms sound very familiar:
I have a sudden problem with my 1TB Ultra. From Ubuntu’s DMESG I get:

[ 3711.011089] usb 2-1.1: new high-speed USB device number 6 using ehci-pci

The O/S recognises the drive but does not detect it. Windows 7, running in a VM on the same machine, also detects the presence of the drive but it does not appear in “My Computer”

Any pointers?
