i’ve got 2 4tb wd my cloud nas that i primarily use only one and the other one is blank.
i was thinking to get an ex2 ultra diskless enclosure and use the disks from both 4tb units in that.
i currently have a safepoint backup of everything, so i was hoping to drop both 4tb drives into the ex2 and set them up as an 8tb stripe.
would i be easily able to do this and restore the safepoint with the same structure ?
i use mostly public shares but also have a private share.
Are you asking if you can restore a Safepoint backup, using the My Cloud Dashboard, to a drive(s) in a My Cloud EX2 enclosure? If so the answer (most likely I would assume) is no. First the EX2 uses a different OS structure (v2.x type firmware) than the old single bay v4.x firmware My Clouds with Safepoint. And the v2.x firmware Dashboard does not have “Safepoint”.
Second, what you can do is copy the user data files within the Safepoint backup to the new EX2 drive (once properly setup) by either attaching that backup drive to the EX2’s USB port and using a file manager to copy the files or attach the Safepoint backup drive to a PC/Mac and copy the user data files to the EX2 via the network.
You really should ask your question in the EX2 subforum (and use the forum search feature if you haven’t already) to see if users more familiar with your device have better tips or ideas.
What ever you decide to do, just remember to run a Safepoint prior to removing the hard drive from the My Cloud enclosure to ensure you have the very latest backup of your My Cloud files.
yea i was wondering if that was possible (safepoint restore) … but it’s not a deal breaker since there are other ways to get the data on the new configuration.
would an rsync be the way to go for that copy operation ?
i have close to 4tb of files in total, so i dont want to do it via finder or file explorer copy if its going to route the file copy process thru my wifi.
would you be able to give me an example of how i can write out the rsync command for this situation ?
can i ssh into the new nas, and issue an rsync command to copy files/folders that exist on the drive that contains the backup files (the backup drive would be attached to the nas’s usb port) ? not quite clear about how to type out the source and destination paths in this case.
another method that i suppose i can also use (to cut out wifi from the picture) would be to attach the nas directly to my computer via ethernet cable, then attach the drive that contains the backup files to the same computer via usb – and then do the copy as normal (finder in mac, or file explorer in windows).
Use the forum search feature, magnifying glass icon upper right, and search for Rsync. There are a number of past discussions on how to use rsync to copy data from one device to another (either local or on a remote network).
A quick internet search brings up a number of pages on how to use rsync to copy data to another NAS. Here are some examples:
