WD My Cloud fails progressively after every power cycle

I have owned a My Cloud drive for a few months now. It has never worked well. When I apply power, it emails me that it has been restarted. About 6 or 7 minutes later, it emails me to tell me that the media scan has stopped. A day or so later, its web administration page ceases to be available on the LAN, although the shares are still accessible. A few days later, the shares also cease to be available.

I gave up trying to access it from outside, as it’s so slow as to be pretty much no unusable.

Even when the web administration page is available, it takes ages to fill in information in some of the fields.

I can power cycle it, but every time the same sequence of progressive failure unfolds over the next few days.

What can I do?

Have you tried a 4 second reset or 40 second system restore? Sometimes a system reset or system restore can fix strange issues. Also note that if you have a lot of data on the drive each time you power cycle the device it may take some time (hours) to scan the drive contents and settle down so its not sluggish.

Tell us about your overall LAN. How new is your router, computers, or other devices? How is everything connected? Are you using Windows or Apple etc.?

I haven’t tried the 4 second reset or the 40 second system restore, no. I’ve power cycled it a few times, days apart.

I power cycled it yesterday, about 22 hours ago. I’ve just accessed its admin page from the LAN; it’s just as desperately slow as ever.

I don’t think the router comes into it, as I’m only talking about access via the LAN. Everything is connected via a 16 port 100 Mb/s network switch. The total other traffic on the LAN is normally very low.

I’m accessing the admin page via Firefox on Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit.

The event message “The device stopped scanning your media” is sent via email. I don’t access the device at all between the power cycle and the arrival of that message. So I don’t think the the question of what I’m accessing it with is relevant; for the admin page, a browser is a browser is a browser, right?

I should add that the firmware is 04.04.03-113, also that there are I think about a quarter of a million files on the device, mostly NOT media files. Its primary use was always intended to be NAS; the personal cloud facility was just a nice-to-have, or at least it would be if it were usable.

You say you are using a 100 Mbps network switch, so what color are the LED’s on the back of your My Cloud? If the preceding is 100 Mbps and the LED’s are yellow then it would work better if you get a Gb network switch.

Have you read through the User Manual?

With respect, I think you’re missing the point. Here are some key observations:

  1. On 2016-07-05 at 21:51:11, there is a “System restart” event (delivered by email) as a result of me power cycling it.
  2. On 2016-07-05 at 21:57:44, there is another event “Media scan stopped” (delivered by email). Clearly that event shouldn’t occur, and equally clearly it isn’t caused by being on a 100 Mb/s network instead of 1 Gb/s.
  3. Today, 2016-07-07 at 20:32, the dashboard is already not available via the LAN. Again nothing to do with the LAN speed. The shares are still available over the LAN.

When the dashboard is available, the speed isn’t just a bit slow, it’s glacial. It can take a minute or so for some of the fields to be populated. The delay is such that the LAN speed is irrelevant. (I’m not complaining about the read and write speeds of the shares over the LAN; they might be improved a bit by a gigabit switch, but they are fast enough for my needs.)

The progressive failure is the same every time I power cycle it.

So how can we diagnose the progressive failure?

Have you tried removing a large number of those files as a test, and see if the problem persists?

Could be either the low powered hardware of the My Cloud isn’t up to scanning that many files quickly, hence the sluggishness. Or there is one particular file(s) that is causing the scan to prematurely end or hang the scanning causing the sluggishness.

Check the following out and see if any of the information helps or do a Knowledge Base search of your own.

Sorry to here you are having so many problems with your My Cloud. I have had mine for over two years and it works fine both at home and when I access it away from home. I have Time Warner Cable as my ISP and I keep my computers up to date, have Windows 10, I have a Linksys WRT 1900 AC router and I own my own Modem which is a Motorola Surfboard eXtreme with DOCSIS 3.0. My cable connecting my My Cloud to the router is a Belkin Premium Flat High-Speed CAT6 Cable. My cell phone is a Samsung Galaxy S6.

I get that, but I just wait, and the UI eventually responds. But I don’t get the progressive failure of other functions. I do have the thumbnailing and indexing services turned off, though (via SSH/boot script).

I think it might be time to start reviewing some of the log files. I can’t remember where they are, but a search on the forum should find out where they’re stored.

I tried generating a log file a couple of days ago. That operation
seemed to fail too, but I can’t be sure.

At the moment I’m copying lots of files off it onto another NAS
drive, but it will take some days. The goal is to see if the WD
thing works better with a small(er) number of files on it.

I hope that isn’t what makes the difference. I bought it as a
general purpose NAS drive, with the personal cloud feature as a
nice-to-have bonus. A NAS drive has to work satisfactorily with
hundreds of thousands of files on it.

Latest news is that I’ve deleted most of the files on it (there were about 1.1 million, now about a hundred) and it seems to be back to life. The content scan doesn’t fail, and it’s even possible to access the external cloud function within a reasonable timescale.

Of course the fact that a large number of files - or maybe one particular file, we’ll never know - kill it, means it’s no use to me. I thought it would work as a general purpose NAS, but apparently not.
