At the outset, I apologize for my English. I bought a WD MY CLOUD without the disk. I have a new 250GB disk. I use the manual installation of the forum, but I have no information that the Linux partitions set up before installing the .iso image. Please instruction
then install the .iso image .After you run the WD lights up the blue LED, however, available disk size is 1.4 gb. ask for information on how to set up partitions and how to properly install the software.
Search the forums for ‘brick’. This will find a number of threads that describe how to correctly partition a drive to make it work as a MyCloud. I can’t remember the best thread at the moment…
As for getting an image, I would suggest you do that my downloading the firmware image from the WD website, and then using zip to extract the rootfs.img file.
It does not matter whether the iso image is made for the drive 1T, 2T, 3T if i want install a program on your 250GB ? I do not see the manual information about this or do I set up a partition before installation or after installation iso.

If I remember right once I had the drive properly formatted per those directions I downloaded the WD My CLoud firmware file and extracted its contents (per some other update directions found somewhere here) and use it to load the firmware on the 250GB drive. I had to do a reset from within the WD My Cloud Dashbord interface after it was all up and running to get the firmware to resize the hard drive and show the proper amount of free space.
Thank you very much for instructions. The hard work and the LED lights up blue. Now I want to upgrade the software from version v03.04.01-219 to vs. v04.01.04-422. I Download, Install, and after rebooting the device version does not change. The alert message appears:
“Firmware update failure. An error occurred while updating the firmware. Retry. If the problem persists, call for service. Code 1003”
I tried. after installing version v04.01.02-417 administration interface froze, could not even restore the factory settings.
Did you start from scratch using the v04.01.02-417 firmware? By starting from scratch I mean removing the partitions on the drive and going through the whole long procedure as if the drive was bare.
So I started from the beginning. clean disk, create new partitions and installed according to instructions. Scared, so I went back to the previous version, but it bothers me that I can not perform this upgrade
Once again, I installed the new version of the software. When the LED lights up in blue, link to the device through the administrative panel. Loading the page takes a long time. Administration panel looks like this:
By restoring the factory settings after a long time the message:
Unable to retrieve the data. Make sure that there are no problems with network connectivity, and try again. (200005).
Unknown error. Retry the last operation. If the error persists, report sought help from a technical support WD. (200000)
settings_device_led_form_error
settings_hdd_standby_time_form_error
settings_time_machine_form_error
diagnostics_tests_form_error
factory_restore_form_error
factory_restore_form_error
You can see that the administrative panel can not read any information on the disk, eg. Software version, the size of the disk.
I have no such problems when working on version v03.04.01-219. All the installation procedure doing the same.
As for the update:
Updating the disk (v03.04.01-219) from the admin panel I received an error on the successful completion of the upgrade. After rebooting the device software version does not change, and alert message appears:
"Firmware update failed
An error occurred while updating the firmware. Retry. If the problem persists, call for service.
Obviously something is still wrong with how you setup the drive. Below are the URL’s (from what I remember) that I used when setting up an old 250GB drive in a WD My Cloud enclosure.
One word of note, do not format or partition the drive as it was a 250GB drive, instead follow the directions exactly for partitioning and drive sizing. This is what I used, from the google drive link above:
Make sure to perform the steps exactly when it comes to setting up the RAID.
I cannot remember if I pushed just the “rootfs.img” to the drive or if I pushed both the “rootfs.img”, “config.img” and “kernel.img” to the drive using DD. But I do remember pulling down the latest firmware for the WD My Cloud from this WD Support link and using the “rootfs.img” file from it. I thought I read somewhere, back when I did my drive at the beginning of this year, in one of the many unbrick threads that it was possible to restore a drive simply by pushing the “rootfs.img” file. But I could be wrong as I cannot seem to find that post again.
I used a Linux OS boot CD to boot a desktop PC and performed all the commands from within Linux. I did not use an external enclosure, rather used a desktop PC and connected the 250GB drive to one of the internal SATA and power cables. I did disconnect all other drives from that desktop to prevent inadvertent overwriting of other drives.
It took me several tries with the various directions because I missed a step or typed in a command wrong before it finally worked.
I think I have read all the instructions on the forum and have carried out more than 30 software installation. In the end, everything done as instructed. I could after I installed Ubuntu. Each command approved without error. I unpacked a new version of v4.01.02-417 and swapped file directly rootfs.img on the latest from WD page. Unfortunately, the symptom is still the same. I’m going back to version 3, and I hope that the drive will work properly. Apparently, something must be wrong with the device.
