WD My Book Studio Edition II keeps disconnecting

I know that my MyBook Studio Edition II Duo 1TB Raid external drive is out of warranty and old now - but I would still like to use it if I can. The trouble is that it seems to keep dropping its connection (via firewire 800 to my Mac running High Sierra) - and so will not work as a place to point my TimeMachine backup to.

I have erased the volume from recovery Mode on my Mac, setting it up as Mac OS Extended (journaled) volume, and it appears ready to go with just under 1TB of free space and both disks looking healthy.

The Capacity light on the front of the unit is on - steady - but all of it is on, not just the bottom section. This would indicate the drives are full, yet they are empty??

Then I set up my Mac to point Time Machine to it, and it starts to back up, but after a while (maybe an hour or two) it just hangs and does not complete the back up. And when I look for t in Finder, it has disappeared

I tried downloading the WD Drive Manager for Mac software, but that seems to not work on High Sierra (although it does show up in the icon bar at the top of my screen)

I have read around the web that many people had problems with this unit losing connection to a Mac. Did anyone ever fix the issue?

Many thanks

Hello,

Please refer to the following KBA article: External Drive: 1394 FireWire connections Issues

Hi
Thanks for your ideas - but none outhouse scenarios are what I am experiencing. The WD HDD Raid is connected and working - then I leave my Mac for a while (several hours/ a day etc) - and when I come back, the WD HDD is no longer connected, and the Time Machine backup to it has not worked…
I have to power off the WD HDD and power it back on again for it to reconnect.
This is not listed in the article you pointed me to…

Any other ideas please?
