WD My Book 4TB - creating a clone of my desktop. Help!

I have just purchased a My Book to create backups of my desktop. I want to create a clone of my whole system and so have downloaded Acronis True Image, which I understand makes a clone of my operating system. I’ve been reading the instruction manual, and I am not sure what I need to do to make the clone.

Acronis says I need to make sure the WD My Book is formatted to NTFS (and not FAT32). I can’t find how to do that in My Book?

Acronis also says that I need to make sure my Bootable Rescue Media is going to work properly since I won’t be able to boot it up via Windows if I need to restore my computer. It talks about arranging the boot sequence in BIOS so that my rescue media device boots up first. How do I do this, and is the rescue media device the WD My Book?

Before I started reading the Acronis instructions (and confusing myself!) I had started to Clone Disk on Acronis True Image. I stopped when a popup box told me “The destination hard drive you have chosen contains some partitions that could contain useful data. Click OK to confirm deletion of all the partitions on the destination hard disk drive”. I have already backed up documents on to My Book so should I go back and Add New Disk to stop everything being deleted, or does Acronis delete everything regardless when it clones my operating system?

Final question, assuming I sort all this out, and make the clone of my desktop on to the My Book, do I then continue backing up my documents using the WD software that I’ve used to date on to My Book, or does Acronis take over the back ups? I’m not clear whether Acronis can be used to restore individual documents from a back up or whether it just restores the whole operating system?

Sorry for so many questions, but thanks in advance for your patience in helping this computer illiterate!

Normally these units comes already formatted as NTFS. If you want to confirm the file system of the unit, make a right click on it and it will give you the information of the drive.

Make sure you are selecting the right option to clone the disk. As a recommendation, contact WD support for assistance on this case.

Thanks for replying - much appreciated. I made a Bootable Rescue Disc, and tried booting my computer using it. However, when I’m in UEFI I choose the option for Acronis True Image WD edition which I assume is the option I need to make a clone, and the computer tells me there is a Runtime Error: 0x40001, Line info (couldn’t write the number down fast enough). From there the computer takes me back to my log in page and I don’t get any option to clone anything. What is going wrong?
