WD My Book 1.5TB transfer rate... not very quickly?

Hi All,

Excuse my ignorance on this but I have just bought a WD My Book 1.5TB external hard drive.  It has FW800 which I have connected up to my FW800 port on my iMac and on my transfers it isn’t transferring at 800mb/s.  More like 50mb/s.

Why would this be?  Do I have to change some sort of setting?

I have nothing connected to my FW400 port so it’s not sharing that.

Hope someone can enlighten me.

Thanks

Andy

How do you know that it is not transferring at 800mb/s?

Because when I was transferring files across to it the little Apple transfer pop up showed me that it was transferring at around 50mb/s.

The speed being 800mb/s does mean that if I have an 800MB sized file, it should take 1 second to transfer it from my mac to the hard drive doesn’t it?

I don’t get a pop up when I transfer stuff.  At least I haven’t noticed one.  Is it part of MacOS?  If so, how do you turn it on?

Not sure but as soon as I start transferring, it comes up.  It is part of Mac OSX, yes.

I see what you mean now.  I think you may be referring to what I think of as the progress bar.

How is you external drive connected to your mac - Firewire?

Yes, FW800 and it is the only thing connected by Firewire to my Mac
