Extremely slow transfer speeds over FW800

I’ve got a 2Tb My Book Premium Edition II that is transfering data really really slowly and always takes ages to mount.

I have it conected via firewire 800 to an iMac.

I’ve tried running Disk Utitly on it and it just says it can’t mount the drive.  I also can’t write to the drive or delete files off the drive.

I don’t have a firewire 800 to 400 cable to try the firewire 400 port and I have no idea where the USB cable has gone.  But I don’t think it is a problem with the cable or port.

Could it be a problem with either of the two drives?  And if it is and I pull the drives out will the data on the drives be readable by themselves?  Or would files be spread across the two drives so they would be unreadable by themselves?

Thanks in advance.

If it is setup to RAID 1 you can pull the drives and read the data. If it is RAID 0 the data sill be spread on both. You may try using USB, and verify that other devices work fine in your computer using FW 800.
