WD LIVE cannot play some AVI files

I’ve had the WD TV Live Network-ready HD Media Player since March with absolutely no problems playing anything I throw at it.  Yesterday for the first time it complained about playing some AVI files.  I went to my other unit which I just about about 1 month ago (WD TV LIVE PLUS model) and same thing.

I thought this was really weird.  Has some new firmware come down that is causing a problem?

I doubt it’s the codec because all my other files ae in that format and it plays most of them.  So far I have come across 2 files it has a problem with.

The files are encoded with:

VIDEO CODEC: DivX MPEG-4 Version 5

AUDIO CODEC: MPEG 1 AUDIO, Layer 3 (MP3)

Thx

Please post the FULL TEXT output of mediainfo for one of the problem files.

Hmmm.   For comparison, can you post the output for one of the similar files that IS working?

I’m thinking it’s because it’s listed as DivX 5.   Strictly speaking, the WD’s don’t support DVIX at all, but XVId is supported.  It’s a bit of a quibble, though, because some DivX files DO work.

The one I just posted works

Aren’t the dimensions of the video that does not work way outside what the WD can handle?

Format profile                   : Advanced Simple@L5
Width                            : 2 080 pixels
Height                           : 1 200 pixels

Manual says-

  1. MPEG4.2 ASP@L5 Rectangular shape video decoding up to 1280x720p30 resolution, support for B Pictures, data partitioning and error resiliency. No support for global motion compensation (GMC).

Yep;  I didn’t even notice that, but you’re exactly right, parnott…
