WD Elements 2TB Portable Hard Drive - getting started

Hi Guys, I am not a computer savvy person but recently I purchased a WD Elements 2TB Portable hard drive and I am at a lost as to how to get it started. I got it plucked to my laptop and expected a Step-by- Step method or a Quick Start Steps to lead me on to get it installed, but I got nothing of that sort coming. The only thing that came with it which appears to be a guide booklet only shows illustrations for me to pluck the external hard drive directly to my laptop USB port and that’s about it. I searched for an Manual on line but to no avail. Could anybody help me with that?

Thanks.:grinning:

Plugging it in Step 1 and 2 is all there is do … Windows should detect it load the drivers and then you’re good to go

are you having a problem ?

Hi Joey,

Yes, I am still having problem. What was supposed to happen after plugging
it in? There was no dialog box to tell me to work on the next step. Do I
have to transfer my files manually or it is supposed to prompt me to take
certain action, like do I want the hard drive to copy my files/folders
automatically or manually?

Kind regards,
Kelvin

Hi Joey,

Where do I look for the Article ID 1717, on how to use a WD external hard
drive with your computer?

Kind regards,

Hi Joey,

Thanks for your help on my WD Elements.

I have another WD My Passport which is also new. My problem is when I
plugged it in my PC be it “HP” or “Dell”, both the laptops do not not show
this external existence in the my computer system.

Can help me to resolve this? The indicator light on My Passport is lighting
up, but both my PCs do not show its existence at all, unlike my WD Elements
which appear as D Drive.

Kind regards,
Kelvin

Is it recognised in Disk Management ? ← click

Hi Joey,

Where do I find My Disk Management in my PC?

Kind regards,
Kelvin

re-read my last post and follow the simple instruction.

I can see the prompter by clicking. What am I supposed to do next after clicking? What is the objective of this exercise? Thanks for helping.

read

and does the drive appear in disk management window ?

It says the following in a dialog box:

You mus initialise a disk before Logical Disk Manage can access it.

Select disks:

Disks 2

Use the following partition style for the selected disks:

o MBR (Master Boot Record)
o GPT (GUID Partition Table)

Note: GPT partition style is not recognised by all previous versions of Windows

Ok or Cancel

By the way, I am using Window 10.

Kind regards,
Kelvin

Hi Joey,

Is the end objective is to reformat the My Passport, using Disk Management?

If there is no Data on the Hard Drive, then go ahead and Initialize, Partition and Format it

MBR if it’s 2TB or Less
GPT if it’s Over 2TB

Hi Joey,

Sorry to trouble you since I am quite new to all these.

How should I partition the drive? There is a whole lot of information and sections in the dialog box.

already told you

I have done that, so I guess the dialog box is just for information.

So I hope the PC will recognise the My Passport now. Will let you know in a sec.

Joey, my PC is still not picking up the existence of My Passport.

What’ s next?

Joey, could it be that it is recognised as another drive like H, but having conflict in the PC, thus not showing. I got a continuous intermittent beeping sound coming from My Passport.
