WD Dashboard errors with JMS581DL

I am using two WD Blue SN580 2TB in two external USB drive enclosures. One of which has a JMicron JMS583 chip, the other a JMicron JMS581DL.

WD Dashboard (version 4.3.2.4) experiences issues with JMicron JMS581DL. The dashboard is unable to read statistics of the SSD like the capacity (“Failed to Load”) and temperature (“Failed to Load”). It is able to read the firmware version however when trying to start a firmware update it fails (“Firmware Update Failed”).

In any case when viewing the SSD in the WD Dashboard for around 30 seconds or trying to start the firmware update, then the device is disconnected from Windows and an error message appears: “Selected device is no longer detected”.

Outside of the WD Dashboard the SSD seems to work fine so far.

To rule out a problem with this specific enclosure I tested the same SSD with two other enclosures - one with JMS583 chip = it works and one with JMS581DL = doesn’t work, same issues.

I also tested the process with different PCs, same issues.

It seems like there is some sort of bug in WD Dashboard which is related to the JMS581DL chip.

Hard to say. However the Dashboard has reached End of Support. If there is a “bug”, it’s not getting fixed.

A compatibility issue between WD Dashboard and the JMicron JMS581DL chip. Since the SSD works fine outside of the Dashboard and the issue is consistent across multiple enclosures and PCs, it’s likely a firmware or driver conflict. You can try updating the JMS581DL chipset firmware if available from JMicron or the enclosure manufacturer. Otherwise, contacting WD support to report the bug might help, as they may need to address it in a future WD Dashboard update. In the meantime, using the JMS583-based enclosure seems like the best workaround.

Thing is: The JMS583 - despite the number being higher - is a few years older than the JMS581DL and doesn’t support SATA (only NVMe). The former chip is on it’s way out (maybe even production already stopped?). Newer M.2-to-USB products are not based on it and are becoming less and less available. Additionally many USB enclosures and docking / cloning stations do not disclose which chip is inside, so it’s not like I can be sure I am getting a product with the JMS583 chip. Which means - at least for this specific application - I can not use WD (and Sandisk?) M.2 SSDs.

Now I got an USB enclosure with a Realtek RTL9210B chip. Its behavior is entirely different. The WD Dashboard doesn’t recognize the WD SSD at all, it seems to think this isn’t a WD drive (while the SSD works normally otherwise).
