WD Black D10 12TB and Synology, Hibernation

Hello,

I have a WD Black D10 12TB connected to my Synology. This is used for hyper backup.
At least once an hour the speed of the disk drops and immediately starts up again. I suspect the disk wants to go into sleep mode but is not allowed to. On the Synology I have deactivated sleep mode for internal and external disks.
Can the behavior of the disk be changed?
Regards

Hi @Schnuffel

The performance drops you’re seeing with your WD Black D10 12TB external drive on the Synology could be caused by power management conflicts. Even though you’ve turned off sleep mode on the NAS, the drive itself might still have built-in power-saving features causing these interruptions.

You can follow potential solutions and insights:

  1. You should check the drive’s settings using Western Digital’s dashboard, look into Synology’s USB port configuration, and ensure you’re running the latest firmware
  2. Try using a different USB port, verify your cable is good quality, and check that the connection is secure.

If these steps don’t work, you might need to reach out to Western Digital or Synology support to dig deeper into why the drive keeps dropping its performance.
