Hi all. I have a My Cloud drive installed 800 miles away on my sister’s home network. I set the drive up on my home network and could access the drive from file manager in Windows, using WD sync, and also WD Access. After setting it up on my home network, I moved the drive to her house 800 miles away. I could still use WD sync from my home and WD Access from anywhere when i was connected to the web. Something changed and I can no longer connect to my drive using these two apps unless I am in her house and on her wifi network.
What changed and how do I get it all working again?
While the WD Sync program will sync with a remote My Cloud one cannot remote map or remote access a My Cloud using Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder like they can when accessing a My Cloud on the local network. WD removed the capability to remote map a My Cloud over a year ago. The WD Access program is generally for accessing a My Cloud on the local network. As far as I remember it cannot access a remote My Cloud.
Did you set up cloud access to use a port forwarding connection?
Has your sister’s router rebooted?
Sadly, I find that if my router reboots, and is assigned a different global IP address by my ISP’s DHCP server, the MyCloud does cannot cope with the IP change in port forwarding mode; it continues to show that cloud access is established by a port forwarding connection, but it isn’t.
The only solution I have found to that problem is to access the Dashboard, and turn Cloud Access off, and then back on again. That seems to force WD’s connectivity server to find the new global IP address to use to connect to my device, and provide that IP address to the apps.
Or set cloud access to relay mode, when it does seem to be able to cope with changes in router IP address.
I keep meaning to get around to asking my ISP if they can reserve an IP address to my router, so it won’t change when my router reboots (which it is doing a lot at the moment, due to a fault in their network…). I bet they will want money for that, though…
