Upgrading a WD 4TB Mycloud NAS

We run a backup from our server to a 4TB WD Mycloud but it’s starting to run out of space. We have a 2nd WD 4TB Mycloud, which we bring into the office to mirror to every other week.

Do we just buy 2 x My Cloud Home 8TB? I’ve watched a Youtube video where it stated that any files are copied via the cloud (and not the local network), which I don’t believe, but want to double check (we don’t currently use any remote internet access to our Myclouds).

I was also thinking about the second Mycloud Home mirroring the 1st without bringing it into the office, to keep the backup , but would that cripple bandwidth after a full backup?

Thanks for reading.

  1. My Cloud Home (MCH) is not an upgrade for the My Cloud despite what WD may advertise, the two run on separate HW and OS with very different features.
  2. Home users buy the MCH because it is cheap, not because it is full of good features.
  3. Enable local access and you can enable SMB3 share from the MCH.
  4. MCH is about 7 years old since introduction and very close to End of Life, in fact another device which uses the same firmware and similar HW is scheduled to be EOL in August, 2024
  5. You won’t be able to run any third party backup software directly on the MCH, no Goodsync, rsync or any other sync that originates from the MCH to the PC or another MCH.
  6. No user installation of software or SSH to the MCH is available for the owner or any users.

The only feature that is somewhat comparable to what you are asking is the limited Network import from the My Cloud OS5 (MC) to the MCH.

How to Use My Cloud Home Network Import

  • Third-party NAS are not supported.

  • Time Machine share should not be imported.

Have you looked at the User Manual to see if that is what your want? You can also look at the Knowledge Base to see what it says about what you are wanting to do.

WD Documentation (wdc.com)

Thanks for that, if you can point me to the bit in the user manual which mentions about upgrading to a new system that would be great :+1:

@PWCircuits

Do you have My Cloud Home devices or WDMYCLOUDS?

Western Digital Product Software Downloads (wd.com)

If WDMYCLOUDS then use the Dashboard.

Hi, as I said above, I have WD MyClouds and I didn’t mention anything about updating the firmware?

@PWCircuits

You posted your topic in the My Cloud Home sub-forum. the My Cloud Home and the WDMYCLOUD are different devices.

You ask about buying two My Cloud Home devices and I gave you a link so you could look at the User Manuals for My Cloud Home devices.

Check out WD products. HDDs & NVMe SSDs for PCs, NAS, Gaming, Data Centers, and AI Data Cycles | Western Digital Look at the Products.

You may want to get a My Cloud Home Duo. For me, my next WD Product will probable be the
My Cloud Pro Series PR2100
