Upgrade Drives for PR2100 Model WDBBCL0120JBK

I bought my PR2100 w/ 12tb already installed. Can I upgrade the drives to 10 or 12 tb or not? I can’t find anything for certain on the web. Thank you.

Yes you can change the drives. You can find the compatible hard drive list here - https://support-en.wd.com/app/products/product-detail/p/138#WD_compatibility

Here is a KB article on replacing the drives in your PR system - 2 and 4 Bay Internal Drive Replacement for WD My Cloud

Thank you. I assume the max capacity is 10tb per slot on the PR2100 as that is the largest pre-filled model sold for both the PR2100 and PR4100. Again thanks.

I’m still a little confused as I, too, received conflicting information. I also have a PR2100 (WDBBCL0120JBK-NESN) that contains two 6TB drives. What is the maximum drive size (per bay) that I can use? I would like to purchase two 8 or 10TB NAS drives but want to make sure there isn’t any firmware and/or any other restrictions.

I upgraded to two 10TB drives (WD Red) without any problems. Depending on how much data you have, it can take quite awhile to transfer over. My PR2100 took 36 hours for both drives to migrate. My PR2100 started out w/6TB drives per slot. Hope that helps.

GREAT! So you were able to expand your PR2100 that came as a 12TB (two 6’s) to a 20TB (two 10’s). I know/realize it will definitely take a long time with that much data but wanted to make sure I wouldn’t pay for the drives and not be able to use them and/or use them to the fullest capacity! Thanks.

I see the list of the WD Red Drives I can use. Can I also use the 10TB - WD100EMAZ drives? I read an article that compared this against the Red and noted that it was a little slower in the grand scheme of data movement. What is your opinion?

I wouldn’t use WD100EMAZ as they aren’t NAS drives, which run 24-7. Maybe you want to roll the dice and shuck some EasyStore external drives and get NAS drives to save a few bucks, but I decided not to. I waited around for a sale. Newegg had WD Red 10tb NAS drives on sale for $202 apiece a while ago. If you can hold out till the holidays maybe you can find a good deal.

OK…Thanks…because it is being billed sold as “WD 10TB WD100EMAZ 3.5” SATA III Internal NAS Hard Drive 256MB Cache (Helium)" - so I guess based on what you mentioned it’s not a NAS drive. Thanks. I’ll check out pricing on the WD Red’s

I understand that the WD100EMAZ is from those external drives WD sells; that they are excellent, a bit slower, but not necessarily full-fledged NAS drives. Many people shuck them from their enclosures and use them in their NAS arrays. Haven’t heard any problems but then problems would most likely be down the road in terms of durability and lifespan. I wouldn’t recommend using them in a NAS but I’m sure others would since they are helium-filled and a WD RED level drives.
