Unable to format drive

WD 1TB Passport.  

I plug the drive into my computer and Windows prompts me to format drive.  I click to format but then says it is unable to format.  I was planning to format then run data recovery to save my files.  But I cannot even format my drive.  I called technical support but they said they would send me a power data cable .  Please help.

Wait for the cable. If you format the drive you will probably not be able to recover files. Post back when you get the cable.
