TVS diode shorted - confirmation of fix?

Hi,

I’m new to this board, and have been searching through posts.  Hoping you can help, please?

I have a 1TB My Book (Essentials, I think) HDD.  The power pack failed recently, and I suspect it surged as it was doing so, as the drive does nothing at all with the new pack.

I have tested some components on teh HDD control board, and wonder if someone could guide me please?

I have taken photos of the bridge PCB and the HDD PCB…

D4 has shorted (~0 ohms each way)

D3 has a high resistance one way, and 398 ohms the other way - is that good??

The zero ohm resistors are zero ohms, so I assume these are OK?

From my reading, it looks like removing D4 should fix this??

Is there something else I should be doing?  Am I just deluded??

Cheers,

Andrew

Look at the posts by fzabkar or send him a PM he is about the only one who has much knowledge about the boards. He has giuded people in making them usable again.

Yeah, it was his posts that I’ve been looking at mostly.  I’ll PM him - thanks!

HI again,

I haven’t had a reply from my PM to fzabkar yet, but have tried removing D4.  This has made some difference, in that the hard drive spins up, but then stops after a few seconds.  The blue light doesn’t light up.

Any ideas??  Tantalisingly close!

Andrew

SOLVED!

Removed D4 and made sure PCB was installed properly.

Could I suggest that it may be a good idea to replace the diode, not just remove it?
In my experiences, these diodes are often used as a fail safe to make sure that you don’t put power the wrong way onto the board.

Good luck!

i have a seagate stay1000202 and i put my laptop adapter (19V) on it so it freid but now i have to remove my tvs 12V diode but the problem is were can i find it on my pcb?
