Transferring old passport in Windows to new passport for MAC

I have been using a WD passport in Windows which is formatted on NTFS and now have a MAC. I want to transfer files (mainly photos) from old passport to new passport compatible with new MAC. the new passport has not been formatted yet. I believe this needs to be formatted to exFat?
Do I transfer the data via the new MAC?
there is just under 1TB of data

Format using exFAT will allow the drive to be mounted as Read/Write on Windows and macOS.
