Time Machine couldn't complete backup error message

I have a WD g-drive 2tb formatted for Mac. OS is 10.11.6. The drive is dedicated to Time Machine backup.
Lately, I have been getting error messages that Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup. This is after several backups have been completed. There is lots of space left for backups. I have erased the drive and reformatted it OS Extended (Journaled). Scheme is GUID Partition Map, run disk utility and everything comes out fine. After several backups, it fails again.
Is this a WD drive problem? How do I fix it.
