Subtitles .srt files often not playing?

Another issue Im having with the WD TV is subtitles for some films dont work - doesnt seem to be consistent either. Sometimes the subtitles than come with the film work, other times they wont. And downloaded subtitles more often than not dont seem to work.

Ive tried renaming them to exactly the same as the film file name, but doesnt appear to make a difference.

We’re not running the latest firmware though - we had a problem last year where the WD TV would crash/reset at exactly 30 minutes into watching something and we rolled back the firmware to the previous version. Unsure if that issue ever got fixed?
Anyway, thanks in advance for help - its driving me nuts.

Hi,

Make sure that the subtitles are within the same folder of the file that you are playing.

Are you experiencing this playing the files over the network or directly connected to the media player?

Yeah, the subtitles are definitely in the same folder as the movie file.
As a test, on a couple of them I went so far as to rename the .srt file name to exactly match that of the movie file name, but it didnt seem to help.

I’m using a NAS connected to the WDTV live through the network.

Seriously, no one else had problems with their WDTV not playing subtitle files?

external subtitles eg *.srt will only work if you’re using “Network Shares

if you’re using “Media Shares / Media Server” aka DLNA … then, external subtitles won’t work.

(you will need to mux / embed them into the file. eg mkvmerge)

I have the same issue.
I have 5 different boxes and they all work fine with Moves and Subtitles in SRT format … except from the WD box. On top of that, Panasonic, Samsung and Toshiba TV does fine with movie/SRT through DLNA.
Im not really sure that the Network Shares vs Media Server / DLAA is the whole truth here.
Its more like sloppy work from WD that everything has to be done Their Way … or the HighWay.

Shame on you WD.
