So it supports AVI xVid or doesn't it? Files won't play

Hi.  I’m having a very frustrated time with my new WD [doesn’t] Play.   I got it because of its supposed extensive file/format support, but I dunno now.  I have some success, but others that really should play (as far as I can tell)… just don’t.

Here’s the media info from an example that doesn’t work:

Incidentally… does it make a difference WHERE the file is?  I read some post somewhere that suggested a Roku could play some files directly from USB but those same files couldn’t play via network.  That seems odd to me, but I wonder if it applies to the WD Play too?  I don’t have a USB drive handy to test, but I’ll try to dig one up.

Before someone asks… yes, I’m aware network shares aren’t supported.  These are served up by a DLNA and other (non-AVI) files work OK.  Nothing seems to work “great” on this box.  I can’t say I’m not disappointed :frowning:  But I’m trying to work with it.

I’m not sure packed bitstream is supported (via DLNA).

Thanks for the reply.  You may very well be right… could you please expand on that a bit though?  I’m a bit of a video-■■■■■.  Is there a fast method for fixing that situation?  I fixed it on my own my transcoding to h264/mp4 but that took a LONG time.  If there’s a faster way that keeps it as a xvid/avi but addresses that packed bitstream element… well, I’d appreciate it.

Actually, since you pointed me in the right direction… it wasn’t hard to find a tool.  For Windows, anyway.  I suppose I’d prefer to do it in linux, but this is fine:   MPEG4 Modifier

Thanks for the headsup.

Otherwise The PACKET BITSTREAM it’s perfectly supported by a USB Driver like a pen drive
