Smartware vs Windows Backup (e.g., File History)

I have personally found Smartware to be quirky and inconsistent in some of its functionality since the day I got it (e.g., sometimes backup and recover tabs grayed out and sometimes not, sometimes connects with MBLD and sometimes not – even when I connect to MBLD using Windows Explorer, etc.).  As I would like it to finally work as it should be optimized for the MBLD, I am ready to throw in the towel.  Does anyone else feel this way about Smartware?

I am thinking about just using Windows Backup Software (i.e., File History on my Win 8 PC) and the MBLD.  Does anyone see any disadvantage to this versus using Smartware?  If so, what do you see as the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Actually, I think I got File History working today (it is hard to tell sometimes if the files have 100% been backed up using most backup software, but it looks like they are).   File History seemed to work without a hitch and transfer quicker than Smartware ever did.  Do others find this?

Hi, it all depend on your needs, Windows backup, in addition to backing up your files, it will also backup your program, but as you can see it is faster to access the files on you backup using Smartware. You can try setting a static IP for the My Book Live for a more stable connection. Also be sure to have the latest Smartware version installed.

Actually, I found Windows backup (File History) much faster than Smartware.   Do others find this?

I think I will stick with Windows bakup for now as I have had so many problems with Smartware for years, unless any of you provide a compelling reason for staying with Smartware – or unless, there is a great new update tto Smartware (I do have the latest version of it now).

That said Ichigo, per your suggestion, when I change the MBLD to a static IP what do I put in for the IP Address, netmask, gateway and dns server.  I realize this is all pretty basic for a  technician, but I am just a consumer that bought this as a home office backup device.
