I have never been able to get a Safepoint to work with my 4 TB MyCloud. The software is up to date. I have a 2 TB WD drive that I just bought attached via USB and it is recognized. It appears there are about 570GB to backup. This morning after 1 full day, it had gotten as far as 9.7 GB, but when I came home later it had failed and said the Safepoint was unstable and to update it again. Any suggestions?
I couldn’t find the exact size requirement for a safepoint target. When selecting my system I purchased a 4TB MyBook to connect on a permanent basis to a 3 TB MyCloud. This arrangement provides an extra TB of storage. Perhaps @Bennor can provide additional guidance.
Can you post the exact error message? The error message may be listed under the notification icon at the top right of the WD My Cloud Dashboard:
How large is the USB drive you’ve attached to the My Cloud? It has to be as large or larger than the content being backed up from the My Cloud.
Is the USB drive new or old?
What is the USB rating on the USB drive? 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0?
Does the Share name for the attached USB drive has a “_x” after the Share name with x being a number?
Here is the exact message
There was an error updating your safepoint.
2 - There was an error updating your safepoint AHLLCSafepoint on the My_Passport share on WDMyCloud.

The drive is a brand new WD MyPassport Ultra, its 2 TB. The size of the backup of the MyCloud is listed as 570GB when it gets far enough to show that. The new drive is USB 3.0
It is listed as:
USB Device Name Western Digital My Passport 259D
Showing 1.5 TB free of the 2 TB even though the safepoint failed and says:
This safepoint is in an invalid state, try updating to fix the problem
Thanks,
Couple of possible suggestions.
Eject the USB drive, then reboot the My Cloud, wait till the My Cloud finishes booting (to a solid blue LED) then reinsert the USB drive into the My Cloud USB port and try the Safepoint again.
Delete the Safepoint, and create a new one and see if it still fails.
Perform a 40 second system reset (does not destroy/erase user files) then create a new Safepoint and try again.
Is the USB drive formatted for FAT32 or NTFS? A total wild guess but if you still have problems, check the files on the My Cloud to see if any are larger than 4GB. As a wild guess it could be possible Safepoint might be exiting out with an error if it attempts to backup a file larger than 4GB to a USB drive that is formatted for FAT32 (that have a 4GB file size limit).
Thanks Bennor… So I deleted the prior Safepoint, ejected the USB drive , did a system restart on the MyCloud , re-attached the USB drive after a successful restart and then created a new safepoint with a new name. I let it run for days. Checking a few times a day. Interestingly the USB backup drive showed 500 GB already used from the old attempted backup (total safepoint was 570 GB). After a few days it got up to 450 GB completed. This morning when I figured it would be done, it had failed again. with the following message:
This safepoint is in an invalid state, try updating to fix the problem
In fact the attached USB drive does not even show up when you click the USB connection, the message says
No USB devices found.
Yet the Safepoint is showing as in invalid state.
Rebooted MyCloud to see if this would help. No luck, now shows USB drive 1 TB used on it and safepoint is in an invalid state.
Also checked and the USB drive is formatted NTFS.
Pretty clear that WD has a junk backup system if a WD device won’t even back up to a WD device. Very disappointed. I run a small business, will be looking for a new solution and be sure to tell others that this system is not worth buying if you are at all concerned about retaining your data.
Do you have another USB drive you can test with?
In certain instances performing a 4 second reset or a 40 second system restore fixes weird My Cloud problems.

The Safepoint / Backup feature is a hit or miss affair for some people. For some it works without issues, for others not so much. In my case I had problems with the My Cloud not even finding my USB drive, or if it found it not mounting it properly. Solution in my case was to deleted all the partitions on the drive, then repartition the drive with a single NTFS partition, then the My Cloud saw and mounted the drive and since then Safepoints have worked perfectly with that USB drive.
Solution, step 1 - copy the entire folder to the USB drive when connected to another computer. Step 2 - Replace MyCloud… Step one worked great. Step two later this week.
