Recovery to the original location failed due to an error

Product: WD 1TB My Passport Portable HDD USB 3.0
I’m aiming to download the backup from my Windows 10 computer to my Windows 11. I figured I’d do a Windows update to 11 once my old system is restored.

Steps I’ve taken:

  • Full back up of Windows 10 onto My Passport using Acronis True Image
  • Installed Acronis True Image on my new Windows 11 Computer
  • Plugged My Passport into new Windows 11 computer. Unlocked it with WD unlocker
  • In Acronis Backup I validated the backup and selected Entire PC Recovery
  • Restarted computer as requested
  • Various errors listed then it switched to a window asking for Bitlocker Recovery Key which I entered.
  • The new computer looks unchanged. In the Activity tab of Acronis it says the backup was validated but “Recovery to the original location failed due to an error.”

I need a recovery to a new location not the original. Have I missed a stage in the recovery process? Is that why it hasn’t worked?

Do I need to install WD Software? I thought everything had to be done through Acronis now.

Thanks for any help that can be offered. My old computer is no more so I’m reliant on recovering the backup.

So, from an Acronis point of view, you ARE restoring to the “original location”, which is your “C drive”.

Since you are running the recovery software on the drive you intend to recover, the software won’t restore over itself. You need to boot from the Acronis media. The Acronis manual explains how to create bootable media on a USB drive or CD/DVD.

If you don’t have it, you can find the user manual here:

Thanks for your reply. I’m not sure it relates to my issue.

Your explanation helped me to realise the default is indeed to backup from and to My Passport. I changed the destination to C: drive and it’s come up with this message:
Are you sure…
previously created backup versions will not be shown in the recovery tab of this backup. To recover them, first add them as an existing backup.

I’m nervous I’m going to accidentally wipe everything. In my attempts I’ve already reconfigured the backup. I hope that hasn’t made it worse.

I’m recovering from my WD Passport, connected by USB to my computer. In File Explorer the WD Unlocker is coming up in Drive D with folders, Extras and Locale. My Passport is coming up in Drive E with the backup folder.

I’m trying to follow the Acronis Manual but I’m afraid I don’t understand it.

Should I still follow your advice or is there another step I should take?

Is this Windows 10 recovery onto a Windows 11 computer even possible? Should I abandon the full recovery and focus on file recovery instead…if that’s possible.

The Help tab in the Acronis app was a much more accessible read than the manual I’d downloaded. However when the HDD to SSD instructions starting talking about removing the SSD I decided to abandon recovery and manually copy files from My Passport onto my new computer. I’ll have to download new apps etc but I’m relieved all my files are there.
