Hey, just got a 2 x 8TB and configured it as RAID1, and WD Utilities reports that all is well – both drives are healthy and online. Loaded files onto the one drive that appears in File Manager (Win 10). Mirroring does not appear to be happening. This device came with no software or user manual. The only user manual on the WD site is dated 2014 and references obsolete software (WD SmartWare). The second drive in the case does not appear in File Manager. Is that normal? What am I missing here?
Yes, it’s normal. That’s what Raid 1 does.
This is expected with a RAID1 configuration. Two 8TB drives in RAID1 are presented to Windows as a single volume, which is why only one drive appears in File Explorer. Data written to that drive is mirrored automatically to the second disk by the RAID controller. The second drive is not meant to be visible or accessed separately. As long as WD Utilities reports both drives as healthy and online, the mirror is functioning correctly and nothing else needs to be configured.
